NSW Premier Mike Baird says a number of Sydney's major sports stadiums are close to receiving their slice of a "once in a generational" upgrades funding package.MR Baird last year pledged $600 million for sporting venue upgrades in NSW, with Allianz Stadium, ANZ Stadium and Pirtek Stadium all vying for a slice.Stadium owners have since been locked in long-running talks with the NSW government to maximise their share of the package. With the state election over, the premier has now revealed pay day for the stadiums is not far away, fuelling speculation it will appear in the June state budget."We're not far away (from a decision)," Mr Baird said on Wednesday after a tour of Sydney Olympic Park with International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach.Mr Baird said the government is assessing the upgrades proposals of the major bidders to ensure the funding delivers the best outcome for sports fans."Obviously this is a once in a generational opportunity to upgrade some of our sports facilities," he told AAP."We've just got to make sure we get it right and put it in the right area."In Sydney's inner-east, the SCG Trust wants to revamp its Allianz Stadium with a roof and state-of-the-art facilities as part of a planned Melbourne-style sporting precinct at Moore Park.Across town, ANZ Stadium in Homebush envisions a modern rectangular ground with a retractable roof and moveable end stands to bring fans closer to the action.Further west in Parramatta, Pirtek Stadium - home of Asian soccer champions Western Sydney Wanderers and the NRL's Parramatta Eels - wants to increase its capacity from 20,000 to about 32,000.There is speculation the NSW government has considered giving about $300 million to Allianz, $200 million to ANZ and the remaining $100 million to Pirtek.AAP wg/km

  • We can thank the WSW if this all goes ahead.
  • Why can't it be an even split?

100M won't get us a hotel, bowling alley and stadium!
  • Not being bias but pirtek stadium the best stadium to watch any sports .
  • Just give it all to Parra. ANZ and Homebush are useless anyway.

  • Give it all to Parramatta  so we can buy more better players the players we got now can play for wenty

  • Wasn't a budget drawn up by someone which came to $100-110 million? If Parra stadium gets $100 mill who  cares what the others get. My only concern is if someone decides ANZ and Parra are two close to be getting $300 million between them. Does anyone know whether Baird specifically mentioned just the three grounds when he first promised $600 million?

    • Previously there was an announcement of "western Sydney" and some newspaper articles even suggested Penrith in the mix.
  • Won't $100m just comprise the State Government funding component? I could be wrong, but I think that there could be other contributors (local council?) to any upgrade. $100m won't get a complete knock down and rebuild. It would probably get an upgrade using existing structures. If we want a complete rebuild the stadium would need to source additional funding. Remember, the money is stadium funding not a grant to Parramatta/Wanderers.
  • Mark Riddell told us so on Twitter

    • Piggy hasn't said anything on twitter, dodging all the questions.

Old Man Craigy over on LU had this explanation for Riddell and "his" belief that the $100 million development is "pie in the sky stuff"

"Assuming no additional income is generated, that loan would be paid down in 30 years wouldn't it?
If the $100m investment generated additional income (and obviously it would), then it would be paid down much more quickly.

Piggy needs to get a calculator.

At a mere 3% return on investment, the $100m is paid off in 16 years.
At a still conservative 4-5% return, it is paid off in 12-14 years.

Of course, the return could well exceed those numbers"

      Cheers OMC.

Of course the stadium development is different as this isn't a loan rather it's a grant given by the State Government.

"Some players need to get sacked from a club and risk losing it all before they really knuckle down and put in the work.  Why did he get sacked, was it lack of discipline for footy and training or off field issues?"
