10 years on and the eels face the exact same scenario!

Im referring to the loss of Gutherson. In 2007 parra lost Luke Burt at a similiar time of the season.Burt was in career best form occupying the 1 jersey when he suffered leg injury which immediately ended his season. The similarities are scary.-Burt was out prime goal kicker and leading pointscorer of the comp.-Gutherson had the same duties and was running 2nd.-Burt was in contention for the Dally M's at that point.-Gutherson the same this season.-Burt knew Hayne would be the long term Full Back but such was his form Hayne had to bide his time on the wing.-Gutherson and French were in the same scenario this season.Everyone wrote us off whe Burt went down but ultimately it was the making of Jarryd Hayne.French who is in the Hayne mould will start this tonight hopefully. That season we were the only side who could compete with the storm as they eventually just managed to get over us in a semi down in melbourne in last game before the Grand Final.Don't lose hope just yet cause i see something similar happening again.

  • Luke Burt was a good player, could create tries from nothing, was a shame I reckon that he never got to prove himself as first grade half I reckon with some time there he would have gone well.
    • I agree and remember suggesting it to Brian smith at the time who quickly shot me down and told me Luke knows what his best role is and where we need him to play. I'm not sure his defence was good enough for half but still would have been good to at least see how he would have handled it
    • I agree there eggman. He's proving his footy smarts at the moment as coach of our NYC side. He played one game at half in 2011 in Round 26 and we won pretty convincingly.

    • He should have played 6 Burty
  • Raid i never thought we were gone when we lost Burt, he was a very poor defender on the line, i always thought we were better off without him.

    • That season Burty was in career best form and led El Masri by a fair way on the point scoring tally. He was the form fullback in the comp that season. It definitely hurt us towards the back-end, particularly as Inu was carrying a leg injury and struggled in filling in as goal kicker for a bit. That and Burt was the best support player in the comp at the time and was continuously cutting sides up running of Mateo and Cayless, his kick returns were always reliable and made the first defender miss.
