Arthur needs better people around him.

Thinking about who replaces Arthur and the best I could come up with was Des but he got the flick for being a one trick pony just like we were yesterday. People would say Griffin is a good coach but I bet Gus Gould pulls the strings in the back  ground. A football general manager is needed a better assistant for BA and who does our recruitment? Why is our junior system in shambles? We have constantly let go of all the good young juniors since Cleal left at the end of 2002. We came good again in 2005 but that was from Smith buying back good players he let go and bringing in a few handy buys in the process. Really though why since 2002 we have let go so many good juniors. One carved us up yesterday. He left well before Arthur was in charge. Max and Bernie pull your finger out and fix it!

  • Does Arthur want better people around him? One of the transition points from moving to a head coach position from an assistant coach position is your role changes into more of an executive manager leading a team of managers (coaches, medical staff, media staff etc).

This is a massive step to make and it's not a skillset that everyone has. I think BA is awesome and has unending passion for Parra, and he's shown to be great at mustering that passion at points in time, but I'm yet to see that he's been able to put in processes and pathways that encourage constant success. To be a successful head coach you've got to be able to leader your entire leadership team and enable them to succeed... I don't even know who BAs leadership team is for the most part.

You always hear people talk about the Melbourne system that Bellamy has put in place. What's our equivalent? Do we have one? Is it working? If not, what are we doing about it?

  • Maybe BA is hamstrung by financial constraints by the club, coming out of years of mismanagement by the club concerning poor signings, letting players go only to be paying half their contract to play somewhere else, the coaching merry go round and finally the  salary cap cheating debacle. With the new management, Max and Bernie, it is obvious that those days are over but that leaves the club in the position of coaches, players and related staff seeing out their contract irrespective of how they perform, it would seem we are stuck with a coach and playing group that can only be changed when their contracts are up.

I had a lot of faith in BA at the start but it's wavering and i think the team is missing the assistant that went to Souths,i think it was Peter Gentle? and the trainer, the Cougar Ronnie Palmer.

It's been a disappointing start no doubt and i can understand fans wanting the axe to fall on the coach and certain players but i can't see the club going down that path because of the bad financial position it leads too.

  • yes indeed, we lost burt and ronny, the list grows..

    • So we lost Luke Burt also, that's disappointing considering the time he spent at Parra,

  • There has been a couple of good posts in this blog and so far it has not been hijacked, guess time will tell when that happens.

I have no idea about the extent or numbers of who is in the coaching area of the club, that is not just the primary coach and his assistant, which if I read correctly is Joey Grima, who is respected. We now have a new trainer in the fellow from the AFL. We lost Luke Burt to the Titans, Peter Gentle to Souths and Ronnie Palmer?

I look around and do not see any of the alternative out of work coaches as being any better than who we have now, I do however see a possible need in regard to recruitment and retention, within the so called 5 year plan that's been the buzz word around here and at Penrith, who seem to be heading in the right direction, & while Gus says he's not involved with the team etc. I don't really believe him.  He was on the commentary team yesterday for 9's telecast in his Panthers T shirt which makes me wonder about having him and Fittler (ex panther) gurgling over the win.

I guess the way things are it must make one wonder when we see some of our younger players that are players of the future constantly being signed by other clubs, and we seem to just be keeping old players that are ready for retirement. The counter is the need for experience but, we need younger players with strength to be signed up. To achieve that the talent and recruitment people may all be doing the right things and if we look at the eels gallery page we can see some younger players in the NRL gallery, some are able to play NRL and others not.

Thing is why are we losing these young players who in many cases wanted to stay at the club? Many accusations are laid at BA that he is not giving them the chance, surely the weekly team selection is not done by just BA himself with no input from his assistant/s?  This to me is an area that I would like to see change as I would love to see some of the younger players given a chance to shine, especially when the experienced/older players are not shinning.

With the season slipping away, and 16 players off contract end of this year and another 13 next, it will either mean a resigning of some of the dead weight again but there are some worth keeping and should be signed now but, those also who are given the new contract should somehow be given a chance to show they are worth that contract, or, maybe before they are offered one, prove you are worth it if you want to stay.

Such decisions by the coach, needs to be considered with advice from his assistants, if not why have them?

      • Tad, I would think the assistants he has would have input, much may depend on how he takes it in, is he going to listen and act or listen and ignore?  If he acts by watching the person in question and seeing how plays and how he fit in with the squad, along with who recommended the player both can then be able to work out if the player is worth a shot.  I would suggest a player like Salmon may well have been as a result of that.

If he ignores the advice/help then as a coach he fails. At least as I see it.   I guess I am just a bit frustrated on the basis of loyalty, BA shows a heck of a lot of it and works with the players and staff, but I wonder how many of them may be just complacent in that regard?  Are they returning that back to the coach in their performances on match day, not just at training.

  • Throw the cheque book at Bellemy to be our football manager next year

    • Salmon was signed from Cronulla if I have the right person, and is a 5/8 and is fairly highly rated, but whether he can fit into the top squad now is an unknown for me.

Sacking anyone is an unpleasant task but sometimes it has to come to that, and if the main coach is removed from the actual process it makes his job a bit easier.  I would think that the head coach along with his assistants along with the clubs CEO in our case that would be Bernie, would work with him as far as the signing and retention of players, and Bernie would be the one who carries the flack for the decision, at least that would be my understanding.

      • Jaemon Salmon, yes signed from Cronulla, played under 16's and under 18's Origin, broke his neck trailing for Australian school boys while going through the process of signing with Parra, signed by Peter Sharp, tried to post the link but didn't work, good article about him on nrl official website
