Slugg, I've seen "Goodbye Mr Chips" many times since I was a child, I have it on DVD and Robert Donat is great as the teacher whose students' love and respect for him mirrored the commitment and affection he had for them.
I love the movies from the 30s and 40s with all those great movie stars who were larger than life who acted with great character actors in films which often reached great heights and even the B grade movies were well worth watching.
My absolute favourites were directed by Frank Capra who made films which portrayed the way that people could be true to themselves and treat each other with dignity and respect. My BS meter is usually set very high but those films were so charming and the characters so authentic and believable that my suspension of disbelief faded away because I wanted to feel that the world could be better than what we have allowed it to become.
They don't make them like that very often these days.
Slugg I love old movies that were on Fox TCN channel. This movie was one of them. Beautiful movie and yes very much a soul cleanser.
Yes I remember Slugg gut wrenching. When my youngest son was in high school a teacher the class didn't like had a pet gold fish. A couple of students killed it and placed back in tank. When this teacher came in and saw his pet fish (he was an elderlely bachelor) he cried inconsolably. When my son told me I did too.
If you haven't read Edmund Hillary's book, it's quite the adventurous life. Very hard man
Scheisse!
