  • No more 'fat club' for Paulo as Eels pack hits ground running

Parramatta prop Junior Paulo is excited for what a new-look Eels pack can deliver in 2020 after the entire squad hit the ground running this week.

Paulo – a seemingly perennial member of the dreaded "fat club" at this stage of most pre-seasons at the Eels and Raiders – looked fit and lean on Tuesday as most of the club's NRL squad arrived at Westmead Children's Hospital to spread some Christmas cheer.

"It definitely wasn't an off-season like the last one," Paulo said with a smile.

"I still managed to keep active and definitely the majority of our team has returned in good nick and we're happy to build from there instead of having to wait for guys to catch up, it's been a good return for everyone."

Paulo was keen to see what new faces Ryan Matterson and Reagan Campbell-Gillard could add to the blue and gold pack, with the latter back into running and light training after an off-season elbow cleanout.

"It's good to get a couple of fresh faces and obviously Origin players as well, people in the mix, it's definitely helpful for us moving forward into next year and what we're trying to build here," he added.

"Especially for our middles, we know what they bring to the team, Matterson was one of Tigers' best performers this year and obviously we know what RCG is capable of in the Origin arena.

"He's come back off the back of elbow surgery so he needs to get some more k's in the legs and I'm sure he'll be ready to go once the season kicks off."

The Eels produced a stunning turnaround in 2019, going from last to fifth with only a few handy tweaks to the roster. If too much time is spent dwelling on that, Paulo said the players would risk getting ahead of themselves.

"Everyone's just ready to take 2020 on," he said.

"It all starts from the preparation during pre-season. We found that out last year, it was a good pre-season for us and we're aiming to have the same impact in 2020."

Another outcome of building a successful culture was the eagerness of so many of 2019s good performers to extend.

Key men Clint Gutherson, Mitch Moses, Dylan Brown, Reed Mahoney and Michael Jennings have all extended or are close to doing so while promising youngster Oregon Kaufusi also recently extended.

"We're trying to build a successful culture like successful teams like Melbourne and the Roosters and I think we're heading in the right direction," Paulo added.

"When you've got people who want to stay at the club, I think we're making the right moves off the field as well so everyone wants to be part of the club. 2020 will tell and hopefully, we can keep building on what we did this year."

The Parramatta Eels will face the Penrith Panthers in a pre-season trial game at Panthers Stadium on Saturday 29 February.

The traditional Battle of the West trial between the Panthers and Eels will once again see all three grades taking part in the action.

The trial will be a great opportunity for Blue & Gold Members and fans to see the team up close in action before the NRL season gets underway.

More details including kick-off times, gate ticket prices and possible livestream links will be communicated early next year.

The pre-season games will kick off with the NRL Nines Perth on 14-15 February before the Eels kick off their NRL season on 12 March 2020 against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Bankwest Stadium.

  • New rules could suit Eels says Moses

Eels playmaker Mitch Moses hopes the off-season rule changes could largely suit Parramatta's style of play – though he isn't sold on the captain's challenge.

Moses said the club's big and skilful outside backs should be well placed to capitalise on a new rule making it illegal to tackle an attacking player in mid-air as they jump to field a kick, as well as a new option to take a scrum from 10 or 20 metres in from touch, or from the middle of the field.

With three potent long kickers in Moses, Dylan Brown and Reed Mahoney, the new 20/40 rule could also come into play for the Eels although Moses backed his big outside backs to ensure it was rarely needed.

"I'm not sure how we're going to go about it or even if you get many chances at [a 20/40] to be honest," Moses said at Westmead Children's Hospital on Tuesday.

"The way our back five run out of the backfield we get over the 20-metre line pretty quickly. If you're in that situation and you see it, it'd be pretty early. They trialled it at the Nines and you could get it away because there was only four tackles.

"It's exciting and it's going to be good for the game, it opens it up a bit more."

The other rules were more likely to enter the blue and gold game plan, according to Moses.

"The new scrum rule where you get the choice of the 10, 20 or in the middle of the field, that's a big one," he said.

"That's a big one for us, we've got some big outside backs that are real skilful and fast. We'll have to trial it out at training and see where we go and where we feel we play our best from 10, 20 or 50. It will be interesting.

"We've got Waqa Blake and Michael Jennings in our centres who can move and we've added Matto [edge forward Ryan Matterson] this year and he adds another strike on that edge. It will be interesting so we'll have to trial it at training and see how we go."

Blake Ferguson should be well-placed to capitalise on more freedom when fielding attacking kicks, given his size, leaping ability and reputation for knowing the intricacies of rugby league rules.

"Yeah that one's a good one, Fergy when we were training the other day made sure he came sprinting in from the wing and howling at me about that rule," Moses laughed.

"He's very smart, he's not a dumb footballer Fergo, that will really help us. We have such big wingers in Maika [Sivo] and Fergo that can really leap and get in the air so that will be interesting."

Moses said he hadn't put much thought into the captain's challenge yet especially given it's not yet clear how it will work – but his initial reaction was lukewarm and he conceded clubs could look to exploit it.

"I don't know if I like that one," Moses said.

"We put so much pressure on the referees already and if you want to go over their ruling, it's a bit hard, if it's their call it's their call.

"It's almost giving the player a chance to go back at the ref after we get taught so much not to bite at the ref and not to go at the ref. It will be interesting to see how that goes. Gutho might have to open his mouth a bit more!"
