Set Restarts + Are Ruining the Game

I'm sure not everyone will agree but in my personal opinion Set Restarts in particular are destroying the game and allowing the referee to basically control the outcome of games. Combine the Set Restarts with diabolical refereeing and bunker calls then the whole fairness of Rugby League has long gone. Seriously today's game was disgraceful refereeing ( yes the Eels made some poor mistakes and the younger players are still learning) but a 10-1 penalty count and not 1 repeat set 🤣. This seems to be a continual report on 85% of refereeing of the Eels games. In my opinion the Eels hierarchy need to speak up about the appalling referee and bunker calls. It's not only the Eels coping it but it seems the lower placed teams get the raw end of the stick. Ricky Stuart isn't afraid of speaking up when things go against his team with refs. About time the Eels did the same or they'll continue to be the NRL doormat team

                  • Seraph,

Stating facts that all NRL clubs and CEOs advertise on public jobs sites like Seek, Sportspeople, Link, LinkedIn or Jora is about as "rose-colored" as thinking you live on a Musk Mars Colony.

                    • HOE, allow me to clarify.

My comment about Rose-coloured glasses was more for Pops' refusal to admit that there was anything wrong with the front office. His perspective is that the leadership are beyond reproach and questions cannot be asked. Because I mention things I hear from people Im deemed hater or have an agenda to take down the club which is pure stupidity but hey, its only stupid when it doesn't come from him.

Also, all NRL advertise or have advertised CEO roles? ok.

            • You could very well have correct information from your sources but I guess time will tell. Nothing has been leaked from the media as yet and they're usually the first mob to sniff out any inner turmoil especially with Parra. I'd be surprised if there's anything in this other than Mills missing his expertise in areas he's more trained and experienced in within Rugby Union

      • Maybe he's more used to Rugby Union more than League. There could be many reasons he's leaving if he actually is..I'm sure Ryles will have someone better lined up

        • Well now his role I am not familiar with and how much they do with players. Though I am curious to know if he mishandled Moses in pre-season this year? Moses' foot was a reaggrevation of his broken toe from the screw due to heavy load.

Now I am happy to say I could be way off as that role is out of my field of knowledge to be fair.

          • But you seeded the idea LB.

            • I know i did.

  • X a million billion

    this

eels need to get vocal and ask for meetings with referee bosses showing our concerns around decisions

    • Thats more than likely a queue for that meeting with the other 7 teams that lost this round Carlo.

I think the rules themselves need to be looked at and that will help take away the subjectiveness of the opinions that refs give.

There is no doubt that different referees have different intepretations over the same rules and I have no doubt that the side they give momentum to ultimately wins the game. Big name players also have an influence, Cam Smith being the obvious standout but I think the refs get a bit starstruck as well. I'll maintain that this comes back to incompetence and performance anxiety rather than corruption, the way Austrac monitors the gaming side of things, you can guarantee anyone related to big wins would be investigated and the corporate and state betting fraternities are paranoid about it.

One final offer I would make is that we need someone to take an overview of refereeing outside of another ref. Someone influential to talk about the rules, intepretation and the role of things like the six again. i.e six again was brought in to keep the game flowing and stoppages for penalties. I think it would be fair to say if six again's were stopped the game would slow but there needs to be a balance in the process.

Referees by nature are junior policeman and seem to lack the necessary ability to "play on" and make judgements about different indescretions. The knock on rules, high catches, play the balls and forward passes having tweaks could eliminate the pedantic needs to keep giving 6 agains. It is always a matter of commonsense and commonsense needs to be added to the rule book.

  • It's just a way for the nrl to control who they want to give an upper hand to. All very vague calls with no explanation. Roll ball is the same.
