New Parramatta coach Jason Ryles is on the verge of securing a significant signing after agreeing terms with Sharks forward Jack Williams from next season.

Ryles has been in negotiations with Williams for several weeks and on Tuesday managed to land his man, agreeing to a three-year deal that will see Williams join the Eels until at least the end of 2027.

Williams is expected to push for a starting position next year following the release of former prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard from the final year of his deal. His strengths suit the style of football Ryles wants the Eels to play in 2025.

The Sharks wanted to keep Williams but salary cap restraints, and a surfeit of forward talent at their disposal, restricted their spending capacity and limited his pathway.

The 28-year-old has played 124 games since debuting for the Sharks in 2018 and came off the bench in Cronulla’s preliminary final loss to Penrith last weekend.

The Eels have also signed South Sydney Dean Hawkins as a back-up play-making option and are in discussions with Bulldogs outside back Josh Papalii.

  • Ryles is really building the squad he wants and I look forward to seeing what it is like. I feel everyone is in for a big pre-season as no one is guaranteed a spot. The 2-5 and 8-13 is still very unkown. I do not think anyone can confidently guarantee a single spot in the team except Iongi (1), DB (6), Moses (7) and Gutho (14).

    • No idea which side Penisni will be.
    • Lomax wing or centre
    • Paulo starting?
    • Tuilagi keeps his edge? who is other backrower
    • Hopgood still at lock?
    • Who is the 9?
    • Which forwards start and who makes the bench
      • some decent forwards will be in reggies
    • Gutherson will be number 4.

      • Ryles interview says otherwise

    • Hopefully they do Penisini and Lomax on one side, with Lomax on the wing.

  • Looking at the comments off sharks supports and they are not fussed he is leaving. I looked at his stats and he has a very high work rate but very poor discipline (errors, penalties and six agains). So hopefully Ryles can get it out of his game.

    • I saw a fair few say they will miss him but it is the way it goes.

    • Paulo has to be a starter next year, he needs to earn his high salary.

      • A question for you to answer HKF....how many minutes would you expect from Paulo.....? lets say its between 40/60 or he can go longer on occasions.

Next question is .....the time he is on the field, does it matter if he comes on after 15/20 minutes i.e. why does he have to be a starter to justify the salary?

Next question, is/ when he comes on the field, is it  the best thing for the team or to justify his salary.

Final question.... do you trust the coach to decide the answers to all those questions?

        • I agree re starting v bench. I don't care what his salary is, if it best suits the team coming off the bench, then that is where he should be. He changed the flow of a few games early in the season coming off the bench. That said, if Ryles thinks he should start, then I am happpy with that too.

        • Paulo averaged like less than half a game all season,  if I'm correct , HKF is saying he must play the minutes an average starting prop plays which is usually more than a bench playing prop. I don't think anyone actually gives a shit when he starts as long as he earns his dosh and is on the paddock.  Fat fuck is only more effective playing less minutes because he's happy to put in for less minutes. He sold us a dummy ( well not "us "as some of "us " saw straight through him ) when it was contract year of course and has declined massively since  . Standard Parramatta player.
