I don't think Ma'u squeaky clean but you don't mind having him in the side. We don't even know why he was in jail, but it was gang related. Second chances are important in this world. If you show remorse why shouldn't you been given a chance to pay back the damaged you're done. And I believe that's exactly what he doing, he confronting his regret head on.
That's your opinion and you are entitled to it. At no point did I reference Mau so that is an assumption that you have made. As for Lodge, I hope we don't sign him. The bloke is lower than a snake's belly.
Second chances are all well and good for the individual to make them feel better and move on from the possible guilt they have (assuming they have any) but it creates two problems:
1 - other players (and the general public I guess) see NRL players get chances so they aren't deterred from badness, and
2 - victims of crime see this sort of stuff and it can certainly bring all their fears and sadness back. Think for example an NRL fan who also happens to be a previous victim of a home invasion bashing. They see the game forgive someone like Matt lodge and they feel like they don't matter and that the game they follow supports criminals. They live with that home invasion in their mind every second of every day for the rest of their lives and watching a player like lodge play again could completely destroy them.
It's a weighing exercise do you put more weight on the individual and their attempts to feel better again or the victims of crime?
