Eels captain Clint Gutherson has sought advice from some of the club's former legends on how to handle the honour of leading Parramatta out onto their new home ground for the first time.
Gutherson, whose talks with Parramatta management over a contract extension remain one of the NRL's burning issues, is preparing to lead Brad Arthur's men in their first game at Bankwest Stadium on Monday.

The skipper took it upon himself to speak to a number of Eels greats about the experience, one which he insists is not daunting as 30,000 people prepare to flood Sydney's new $360 million stadium for its grand opening.
"I've spoken to a few past captains about running out and trying to enjoy and embrace the occasion," Gutherson said. "I'm just really excited and looking forward to it.

"It was exciting running out there with 10,000 people turning up [on Wednesday night for an open training session]. It's going to be a big moment and I'm super proud to get out there on Monday in front of a full crowd. I'll just enjoy the whole day.
"It's in the middle of Parramatta and it is our home – and now we've got to make it our home."

Gutherson and Eels halfback Mitchell Moses head a long list of names unsigned at Parramatta beyond this season as Parramatta follow a meticulous recruitment and retention strategy.
It's likely to be the furthest things from the players' minds though when they take on the Tigers on Monday, almost 1000 days since they played their last home game at the old Parramatta Stadium.

The Eels have already trained on Bankwest Stadium several times – including under lights in front of fans last week – and are sweating on the fitness of recruit Blake Ferguson who is nursing a rib complaint.

'We're not asleep at the wheel': Eels won't listen to outside noise

"He's going alright," Arthur said. "We’ll see how he gets through [Sunday] and we'll see what happens for him [on Monday].
"He hasn't done much [training]. It's a pain tolerance injury. You can’t make it any worse, but it is what it is."
Several Eels players have been frank in their assessment of their temporary home at ANZ Stadium for the last two years, in particular to their failure to turn it into a fortress.

But Arthur wants those days to be nothing but a distant memory.
"It's nice to have our own stadium and a ground that we can call home," he said. "So that's great, moving forward. But it's just not going to happen for us either.
"We’ve got to turn up with the right attitude and we've got to make sure that we can maximise any advantage that we might get playing at the stadium. It has been a while since the boys have had to play in front of 30,000 people and be nice and close to the action."

  • Interesting and annoying article.  The first half is good with Gutho having time with former eels captains for advice.

But typical of what's going on now with anything to do with the eels in the media its all about the contract issues, the 2nd part of the article is a simple repeat of what was already in another article in the SMH.

    • Boring as batshit Colin

      • Not as much as your post BENNY, which is akin to you being the bat hanging upside down with it running into your mouth.

Point 1:, I did not wrtie the article, 2: Its in two parts, don't believe me go to the link and read it on the media page, always post the link to show its not my opinion, which is in the first comment I made.

So back to sleep on your branch.

        • Nice retort Colin! Certainly craps all over the article (-:

          • The 2nd part of the article got to me, and I am totally sick of this sort of crap going on with the media and journo's, so the main part of my rant is regarding that, and when compared to what Guthor is saying shows how the journo's have to add the fruit to the bats with the last part.

  • blah blah blah

  • I'm sure Guth would have told the journo who he spoke to and what they said - it would have been nice if they could have relayed that instead of rehashing the contract rubbish for the thousandth time.

I like the idea of him taking the time to talk to past leaders though - shows alot of class and respect on his part.

  • If he did talk to of the eels legends i hope they said to him go out n beat the tigers and you and Moses resin with the eels

  • Hmmmm another contract article...how interesting.

This looks like another "just in case" selection and I doubt Talagi will get many minutes if any."
