1. Cowboy's played well and deserved to win.

2. We cannot continue with JA in the 17 or for that matter the 21

3. BA has essentially split this team up with his approach to playing JA. Did anyone notice the Moses interview after the game "he was ropable" does anyone understand why? He was essentially replaced by JA playing the 7 role and him playing somewhere in the centres and 5/8. Note this all happened in the first half.....the key breakdowns and fuck ups all centred around JA's involvement, even if he did nothing particularly wrong....he was just there and showed that he could not handle the job....shovelling it out like we did the previous week is essentially the game plan Cowboys expected. Todd Paynton knew this and instructed his team to play in the middle and keep it tight.

4. The first half Parra had say 6 chances to score and Cowboys 2. The Cowboys executed their opportunities pefectly, both those tries were not defendable. All ours fell down through poor execution. 15-0 was not a true indication.

5. Second half Moses came back into playing the 7 and JA disappeared, I don't think Dylan Brown hardley touched it in the first half....second half we had two tries disallowed that should have been scored, Lane fumble over the line and I cannot remember who was involved with the second....anyway the score could have been 15-12 and game on.

6. Because we didn't score the points we played catch up, Cowboys were energised at the real prospect of winning whereas they may have taken the gas at 15-12.

7. Letting in those last 3 tries was embarrassing, some ordinary one on one misses and no cover defence, DB is in the front line, he is our cover defence, JA tried hard but so does my 20 month old grandson.

So summary is we cannot win many games with this current squad and the realisation for BA is to have different plans for different sides, Feldt is not a great winger and has errors in him but with good execution inside him he is pretty good. No better than ours, some people believe Pereham was exposed/showed up.....I don't believe that, he was ok....its just like riding a bike and we had one link broken, fucks the whole ride.

BA will not be sacked and arguably we have no one better for the sake of what we are learning at this point in time. If JA is not playing next game and we have Marata back in the centres, we can still beat Panthers, no chance otherwise.

Finally some good news, if no one has said it already....The Brisbane press made a statement that JA has been offered to Storm, presumably for next year but we could start a petition to have him go now. It would be best for everyone with the possible exception of Storm.

I have tried to rationalise this blog into something coherent given all the vendetta's and wasted words on BA , create a platform of analysing where we went to and create room for what ever fixes can practically be applied.

PS and note, I didn't need to mention the word nepotism in the whole blog.

I am a massive Parramatta tragic fan and was at the game on Thursday. And whilst it was an enormous victory (beating Melbourne is better than winning against the dogs these days), it is still a bit difficult for me to get too excited for the following reasons:

1. Melbourne were not at full strength. Most people (fans and commentators alike) have forgotten that Harry Grant was not playing. This kid single handedly pulled apart the NSW defense in the final game of SOO last year, and a major reason to why the tigers won so many games last year. He would have had a much bigger impact on Thursdays game than Mahoney.

2. Edge defense. We don't appear to have learnt from last years sins unfortunately, and we cant sugar coat the loss of Jennings. And Opacic is still very much a work in progress. Niukore did a formidable job on Olam but he was exposed at times even on a wet track. Gutherson was also tremendous as our last line.

3. The wet weather worked in our favour. This stifled Addo-Car and Papenhuizen in attack. One wonders if whether both their breaks would have lead to tries. Also Olam may have had better success attacking a second rower.

4. Sivo scoring two tries off bombs against a smaller average winger. I felt sorry for George Jennings but Sivo was up against a sub par edge with R.Smith and G.Jennings. I may get a bit more excited if he can replicate his same feat in 2019, or repeat that performance against better opposition like a Tupou or a Ravalawa. Also I'm sure Bellamy will fix this edge throughout the year.

5. Assistant coaches. I must admit that i am an outsider - and have no basis on making this claim. But it appears to me that whilst Arthur may be a good head coach we lack power in assistant coaches. I am not a fan of David Kidwell since we can never seem to match the defensive prowess of a Melbourne, Roosters, Raiders or even Sharks. Some of these teams have the worst individual defenders (e.g Josh Hodgson) but as a unit they are trained to be impenetrable. It worries me that even with our calibre of players we still allow teams to run around us.

I hope they can prove me wrong. I will still be going to every game and living every try and big tackle. But history has taught me to approach every year with cautious optimism.

Eels for life

We have all read the many post mortems by various Media outlets. No question, we came up short and were pribably March premiers and lost our mojo as season pregressd. Wjat worries me is that we have not addressed the key issues stopping us making he next natural step. Pros - we have the competitions leading ff loader in the forwards in Junior. WE have a top 3 tackler in Reed. We have a top 10 try assist in MOSES. When we are hot we have an incredible 60 minutes in us. The remaining 20 is what lets us down. When the first rotation starts and we lose our bookends we momentum and trust in the defensive line. This snowlballs ont Mitch and his kicking game goes off becuase he now kicking under presuure and often at the back of a poor set.

We need to find :

A rep quality Front Rower who charges at them, can pop a little ball before the line and more important doenst lose th ruck when tackled. Got be maintained and quick teh play the ball. Who is available, can we afford him. Will he be happt to be a No 14 and do some real hard stuff as the game ebs and flows as momentum starts to make its play, Penrith appears obvious as they try and keep their kids from the 2020 GF team. I would be looking at Quuensland Cup or similar. LODGE is not the answer IMO. Daniel Saifiti borther a YES. Not as developed as his twin bother but has similar characteristics Thomas FLOGLER frnm Broncos another good one. Either way need be capable of bg minutres an acvcurate defense.

Centre to replace JENNINGS. Few out there like Whare and Jimmy the jet. Can play but injury prone an both have issues that attrract media attention. NADEM being shopped arond as well. Think we need to invest in real speed . WAQA has real speed but his defensive issues are not yer corrected so may find himsef on wing r playing Reggies.

WE know know that the kicking game is more vital than ever . Mitchy can still deliver on that. His running game needs to lift big time. Run and plays eyes u football.

BA must work on the defence as No 1 Priority. Then he can develop a system in attack that straighens our attack uo. We can play sdeline to sideline of we have the,m back pedallu ort compressin the in the line. He can buy Bargain priced players but their skill set or strenth has to add to teh squad,. Not replacong life for like.of type of players we let go.

BSA work out wjay shape you want the attack to play towards.

Work out variation for tacvkles 1-3

Try and mainain tthe momentum when the Front rowers go off not be completely be dominated. May involve tacticallly kicking trwards sidelines so play set peices and take the 1-04 wuick play the balls and risk of sic again happening.

We have the team to go higher. Bu we need to stay heathy and YES we need to start brining kinds through after June, Stil have a sneeky feeling we have a decemt player cming on boad for 2021.

GO THE EELS

NRL checks Cartwright's salary sacrifice

The NRL has asked Parramatta to hold off announcing the signing of Bryce Cartwright as the NRL Integrity Unit looks into a couple of things that raised concern.

The NRL has been doing its due diligence on Cartwright's exit from the Gold Coast, with the former Panthers backrower walking away from a $600,000 deal with the Titans for a $130,000 deal with the Eels.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing, however given the significant salary sacrifice, the NRL wants to make sure everything is above board before the Eels announce his deal.

My family and everyone knows me being in the blue and gold. Keeping it like that was much easier for me."

Among the changes in his life since launching his career with an eye-opening debut against Penrith in March, is the way he manages his workload after a back injury derailed his rookie season.

Having spoken to plenty of clubs to gauge their interest in Brown over recent weeks, the common concern was his ability to overcome his back issues.

The reality is, it’s something he will have to manage for the rest of his career, but Brown is confident it won’t force a premature end to it.

“It’s hard to be young now,” the 19-year-old admits.

“You can’t jump around and do silly things anymore. Gym is a bit different. You can’t go in there and throw weights around, you have to work on your core and do a lot of specifics before and after training.

“I wanted to go skydiving again but I thought to myself ‘I don’t know if that’s the best thing for me’. I feel it’s for my own good [to think that way]. I know myself I’m not going to be stupid enough to throw away something I’ve worked so hard for.

“My diet has changed. I was quite a frequent takeaway guy. Living in Sydney it’s so easy, they’re on every single road man. This year I have changed quite a bit. But I’m not a vegan or anything.”

Brown has never seen Andrew Johns play. Growing up in New Zealand, he’d heard of Greg Inglis and Cameron Smith, but his rugby league knowledge didn’t extend much beyond that.

Now, after joining the Eels coaching staff, the eighth rugby league Immortal shapes as a pivotal figure in the development of one of the game’s brightest stars.

“I walked up to him and shook his hand,” Brown said of meeting Johns on Tuesday.

“I didn’t say much. I was pretty nervous. Straight away, as soon as awe started doing drills, I learnt so much.”

Brown grew up playing rugby union, and while he didn’t give thought to switching codes in recent contract discussions, he left the door open for a future stint at union.
Andrew Johns passes on tips to Dylan Brown and Eels teammates at training.©parraeels.com.au
“I’m enjoying rugby league at the moment,” he said.

“I’ve had a taste of the NRL and once you make it you get this hunger in you and you want to get better. But Sevens is something I’ve always looked at as a possible thing. They travel the world and get to see so much.”

Brown’s family made plenty of sacrifices moving from New Zealand to Australia to allow him to pursue a career in rugby league.

But he insists he has never felt the pressure of having to justify the commitment his family has made, or giving into temptation to potentially return home and link with the Warriors.

“The thing with my family that has made it so much easier for me, is that really don’t mind if I make it or not,” he said.

“They just wanted to be with me. My brother came back from England. My sister is still in New Zealand. We’re all there for each other, whether we make it or don’t make it. They’re here for you no matter.

“I have nothing against New Zealand, it’s my home country. But there are a lot of opportunities over here. I feel this is is where I think I can grow and learn so much more - especially now with Joey at our club.”

One man Brown wanted to thank was coach Brad Arthur, who is arguably the five-eighth’s biggest supporter.

"Brad’s someone I’ve always been close with,” he said.

“Coming into the NRL as such a young kid, I needed to have a good relationship with the coach or it wouldn’t have worked in the first place.

“Throughout the year, with my back injury, we grew closer. What if we were able to quantify the amount of this “involvement” a player had?

Here’s an article from the Courier Mail after the Brisbane Broncos lost 12–8 to early 2014. Apologies to Peter Badel, but it’s the first link that comes up in Google that mentions involvement rate (he’ll be redeemed later):

“Broncos players were left stunned by their 12–8 loss to the Titans, but of equal surprise was Thaiday’s uncharacteristic low involvement rate with the ball in the Queensland derby.

Data provided by Fox Sports Stats shows the former skipper made four runs for 22 metres.

It was Thaiday’s lowest individual hit-up count of the season — and only marginally better than his one run for two metres against the Bulldogs in 2009.”

Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of information here about involvement rate. All the reader knows is that Thaiday attempted the fewest runs in over five seasons. The article later mentions Thaiday making 38 tackles, which was his highest tally for the season indicating he was very active defensively. However there’s no information to glean if his rate of involvement was down because no rate is mentioned, just some counting statistics where the inference is that more equals better.

Using a metric named (for now) Involvement Rate, can use the total number of plays during a game and estimate the percentage of those plays that a player was involved in during their time on the field, either taking a run or completing a tackle. The inclusion of the number of plays is important, as it normalises the rate of involvement since the number of plays will dictate how many opportunities there are to make a run or tackle.

Why Involvement Rate?

In previous articles, I’ve looked at Run % and Tackle % as a way of quantifying workload on either side of the ball. Whilst both statistics are useful to look at in isolation, when you combine them you can not only see the total rate at which a player is involved in a game, but also how minutes played the or number of plays in a game can affect either side of their game.

The addition of Run % to Tackle % to construct Involvement Rate metric solves a few issues. Firstly, it reduces how involved Hookers are for Tackle %, since their roles are primarily about defensive and distribution with very little freedom to operate out of dummy half. It also increases involvement for edge players and fullbacks, especially those who take a lot of early hit ups bringing the ball out of their own area after a kick.

Daniel Alvaro hitting the ball up for Wentworthville ( “DANIEL ALVARO” by NAPARAZZI is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0)

As usual, there’s a few caveats with this data. Firstly, it the number of plays that someone was on field for is an estimate since there’s no public data that will give the exact number of plays. Run % and Tackle % only look at how often a run or tackle is made, it does not consider the quality or impact of a run, Involvement Rate will only look at the rate of which someone made a run or a tackle, with no accounting for quality of run or tackle.

The other is that comparisons across positions isn’t necessarily the goal of this metric. Middle forwards (front row, lock, hooker and most interchange players) generally make the most runs and tackles during a game and converting their volume statistics to a rate of occurrence still ranks them at the top. Comparing full backs with front rowers doesn’t show anything useful when looking just at Involvement Rate. Using an NBA example, you wouldn’t use offensive rebound rate to compare Trae Young and Giannis Antetokounmpo, but you might use it to compare Andre Drummond and Joel Embiid.

How to use Involvement Rate

With Involvement Rate quantifying player work rate in rugby league, it allows us to answer some questions that previously were left to the eye test alone. Who are the most involved players in the NRL? How do the starting front rowers in the NRL rank for Involvement Rate? Is a player more involved when they play on an edge as a second rower or when they start in the middle as a lock? Currently we can look how their volume of work changes, whether their runs or tackles improve or decline. It shows the result of their work, but not how they got there, and there’s no weighting for the number of opportunities to run or tackle the ball.

To set the scene, as with my other articles in this series, the below chart has been updated with Involvement Rate (shaded blue) in addition to Run %, Tackle % by position for the last six NRL seasons:

Involvement Rate, Run % and Tackle % by position, seasons 2014–2019

The above chart tell us that middle forwards are involved in one out of five plays when they are on the field. Hookers and second rowers are involved one to two times every five plays and backs are less than once every ten plays. This isn’t to write off the involvement of backs, but just emphasises that they’re not the workhorses of rugby league and we shouldn’t be comparing Involvement Rate across positions.

As stated above, middle forwards and halves are really the only valid position comparisons for Involvement Rate. Hookers end up on their own due to an extremely low Run % but would still be in the mix when you’re talking about middle players and Tackle %.

And even within positions, there are some problems. Utility interchange players are compared against middle forwards, as this latter group comprise most of the numbers 14–17 on an NRL bench. As stated in the previous articles, without reclassifying interchange players into middle/edge/utility there will always be a bias towards the middle players and rate the utility players unfairly.

Revisiting the Thaiday example

Returning Thaiday example at the start of this article, by looking at this game a bit closer and some things become apparent. That game against the Titans was the second highest number of opponent plays the Broncos faced all year (188), the third highest number of plays by the Broncos all year (181) and the most total plays for the Broncos that season (369).

Given the high number of plays, this would indicate the ball being in play far more often than usual and Thaiday may have been conserving his energy for defense by running the ball less. The article also mentions that Broncos focused their attack down the opposite side of the field. Both could both be a reason for Thaiday’s low hit up total.

Now we can answer the question, was this Involvement Rate for Thaiday uncharacteristic? Thaiday attempted 3 runs and completed 38 tackles, combining for 41 “involvements” in 51 minutes in a game with 369 total plays. Using these numbers, Thaiday’s involvement rate for the Titans game was 17.4%, or approximately one run or tackle in every five plays. For the 2014 season his Involvement Rate when playing in the second row was 17.8%. We can conclude that it was low, but not significantly and still above average for his position (13.2% from the above table).

What does a “good” Involvement Rate look like?

Now that we’ve demonstrated how Involvement Rate works, let’s look at the top 30 players over the past six seasons.

You could really rename Involvement Rate as the Daniel Alvaro metric. The Eels forward has three of the top four seasons for involvement rate (2017, 2018 and 2016 respectively), with two of them above 25%. In plain terms, Alvaro either making a run or a tackle in 1 out of every 4 plays while he is on the field. To be consistently putting in that much effort on the field for 35+ minutes a game is a testament to his motor.

His only other NRL season (2019) was ranked 12th. Chris Satae’s 2018 season with the Warriors is the only other player in the last six seasons to hit 25%, and only more (Tim Robinson for the Sharks in 2014) has hit 24%, highlighting just how incredible it is for Alvaro to have multiple seasons above that mark. Additionally, if you refer to the chart above the highest involvement rate by position is 19.1%, meaning each of those three seasons by Alvaro was at a minimum 30% higher than the average player.

There’s something impressive in Alvaro’s dominance, which we’ll get to shortly. First, let’s look at the Involvement Rate against % for all middle forwards for every game from 2014–2019, shown in the scatter plot below:

Involvement Rate v Minutes played for all middle forwards, NRL seasons 2014–2019

Generally, there is an inverse relationship between minutes played and Involvement Rate for middle forwards, which makes sense as fatigue becomes a bigger factor with high minutes. You can see the trend line highlighting the decline over time.

Now here’s Alvaro’s plot:

Involvement Rate v Minutes played for all Daniel Alvaro, NRL seasons 2014–2019

Unlike most middle forwards, Alvaro’s output doesn’t drop if his minutes increase, it increases by the slightest amount. The only other forward over this time period that I could find to have a similar relationship was Sam Burgess when he was playing in the middle for Souths. The scatter plot above also shows Alvaro has had only had a handful of games where his Involvement Rate has been below 20%. He’s just on another level when it comes to getting involved on the field.

2018 was the peak for minutes played by Alvaro at nearly 46 a game, yet it still yielded an Involvement Rate of nearly 26%. Alvaro’s lowest season for minutes played was 2019 which also produced his lowest Involvement Rate, but still considerably above the average forward at 23.6%.

Alex Twal is a good example of how increased minutes usually decreases involvement rate. By traditional statistics, he had his best season of his short career, playing an average of 53 minutes and making 34 tackles and 11 runs per game. Looking at Involvement Rate, it tells a slightly different story. His 2017 and 2018 seasons ranked 10th and 18th for Involvement Rate, both in the 23% range, with his average minutes at 36 and 40 per game for those two seasons. Yet in 2019 due to that huge uptick in minutes, his already impressive Tackle % dropped by 2% to 31%, and his Run % dipping below 10%, over 3.5% lower than his best season.

His 2019 ended up ranked 145th for Involvement Rate over the past six seasons, which sounds like a huge drop but at 20.6% it was still above average for a front rower (19%) or interchange player (18%). This just highlights that an increase in minutes usually results in a decrease in rate of output, but in Twal’s case it still resulted in him performing better than the average player in his position, which is was a net positive for the Tigers.

An example of how to apply Involvement Rate for a outside back is Josh Dugan. Yes, he gets a lot of flak from fans for making mistakes and picking up a knock seemingly every tackle. His actual Involvement Rate

However, he has two of the best seasons by Involvement Rate of a fullback, with his 2015 and 2016 seasons hovering around 25% higher than the average fullback. He’s also one of only two players to post an Involvement Rate for season higher than 10% (minimum five games played), which occurred during the 2014 season.

In fact, over those six seasons Dugan only has two stints where his work rate has been below average for his position — three games on the wing for the Sharks in 2018, and eight games at centre in 2019. You can question his decision making (especially regarding his hair), but there’s no questioning his heart and effort level.

Summarising Involvement Rate

Involvement Rate is not a catchall metric that can be used to evaluate everything a player brings to a team. It is only looking at two specific parts of the game (running and tackling) and even then, it is only considering the incidence of these two parts, not the quality or effect of them. This can be seen by two of the biggest game breakers of 2019, Latrell Mitchell and David Fifita, having below average Involvement Rates last season. Some players can have incredible impact on the game and turn matches in an instant with minimum involvement.

Daniel Alvaro may be elite according to Involvement Rate, but you wouldn’t say he’s a more damaging runner than Andrew Fifita. Yet both types of players are important to the composition of a successful team, although the Alvaro’s of the rugby league world don’t get the plaudits and are harder to quantify. The aim of Involvement Rate is to help identify those high work rate players every club need as a compliment to their high impact superstars.

Given the limitations of publicly available data it, this is approaching the limit of analysing player work rate. As the saying goes, don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. Involvement Rate isn’t perfect but can still be useful in its current incarnation. Seth Partnow, current writer at The Athletic and former Director of Basketball Research with the Milwaukee Bucks argues that being “less wrong”, not “right about everything”, is the goal from analytics in sports.

“In this regard, the development of data-driven insights and their adoption within sports is little different. In very few cases, if any, have large competitive advantages been gained from one big idea as opposed to the accumulated value of many smaller edges. Being “better” is not being right about everything; it is being less wrong.”

Involvement Rate fits the above quote, as now we have a tangible number to talk about when a players involvement in a game is brought up. It’s not perfect, but previously it was either vague, imprecise or indefinable. Now it’s still not exact, but better defined and quantifiable. We’re now less wrong about players work rate during a rugby league match. How much “less wrong” is arguable, but we’re moving in the right direction.

The next step would be to combine individual player GPS data to weight runs and tackles by movement and speed. But without that data becoming public (or receiving an invite to the NRL Data Jam) that’s unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future.

Link: https://medium.com/@carlosthedwarf/involvement-rate-a-metric-for-player-work-rate-for-rugby-league-31c2ed26a1eb

What happens if Mahoney gets injured or suspended next season. With McIllwrick retiring surely we need to sign a replacement. I know some people believe that Stone can play the hooker role but im not confident he would do a good enough job for us if we want to contend for a Top 4 spot. Preferably i'd like to get an experienced Hooker to help mentor Reed. So making a play for Issac Luke would be worthwhile. Sure he didn't have a good season this year but he had a good season in 2018 & maybe a change of scenery can help elevate his performance. He's the most experienced Hooker on the market & arguably the best. Other options include Levi, Lichaa, Brittain, Griffin, Baptiste. Maybe even making a play for Peats to come back since he lost his starting positiom to Rein at Titans.
