Dylan Brown

Why is everyone questioning this kid’s ability. I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but those hating on him for his game against sharks are being absurd. In one of the other blogs Brett Allen listed the halves that our 23 and younger and proposed the question if any of them is better than Brown. He is 100% right. Dylan is 20 and is probably the best under 23 half in the NRL. He maybe in his third NRL season but he is still very young and has had injury interrupted seasons.  I am not saying Dylan Brown will be as good as Nathan Cleary but a lot of people were concerned if Cleary was anything special when he was young, because it took him until last year (23 years old) to actually be a dominant player in the NRL and that is still younger than normal.

People have questioned Brown’s ability when Moses went off the field and his ability to create attacking plays. Brown is only 1 person out of 13 players on the field. Are combinations on our edges are still developing as people are running wrong lines. So, it is absurd to blame Brown for eels’ clunky spreads when the combination on his outside is still poor. He can only do so much. I could go to the point in saying that he is the most crucial person in our attacking wide spreads. He squares the defense really well, but his work gets undone when our player run wrong lines, or we have no decoys on the edge.

His involvement increased when Moses went off the field as he was regularly playing first or second receiver. My only criticism is that he should off started controlling the kicking game earlier on (to avoid Gutho horrible bomb lol). There was no need for Dylan Brown to increase his responsibility so much when Gutho is capable of increasing his workload and if we have a half (Will Smith) on the bench.

    • Spot on Mick.

No one is hating on him.

Just because other people claim they watch the game more closely than everyone else doesn't mean they are right and we should change our opinions.

Dylan is young and can be anything but at the moment he isn't living up to the hype. That's not to say he won't get to that level but he ain't there yet.

      • Yea. I used the wrong word. I should of used criticise rather than 'hate'.

      • I am not trying to cause an arguement or be rude but I think this is where most people 'criticise' Brown unfairly. Some of you think "he isn't living up to the hype" currently but also that he "can be anything." However, I believe that the expectation for Brown to be more dominant and influential is unfair for someone of his age and experience. To be honest, he is playing so well for someone so young, and arguable better than Cleary when he was 20 years old.

        • He was hyping himself EA.

I think that's where a lot of the criticism comes from.

Not sure he is better than Cleary was at the same age. Seeing as Cleary is only a couple of years older, Dylan has a long way to go to catch up to him.

          • You can forgive him for the 1 million dollar hype. That was his first ever interview. In regards to the All Blacks, that was the media twisting his words around. He speaks about it in a Refuse to Lose podcast.

  • No questions here all we are seeing is growing pains.

Parra need to persist like they have with Moses and Mahoney.

Brown will pay off in spades.

  • He will get better and has talent. But last night i was waiting for him to take over for Moses and i did not see it, Will Smith in my eyes out played him, doesnt mean Smith is better than Brown just tonight Smith looked better and contributed a bit more. He runs fine and defends exceptionally though as a distributer i feel he is lacking in either experience or confidence but all i saw last night and last 3 games is Brown has shown me nothing to feel confident in him taking over as a 7 if Moses is out, he seems to comfortable in his role on the left side of the field and does not look to take risks.

There's a superstar in there, just wonder when it will come out in a regular basis.

    • I don't think BA wants Brown taking over the team when Moses is off the field. Observing the game, Gutho steps up mainly. And secondly Smith is still a decent player and a half, so there is no need for Brown too overplay his hand. So maybe BA instructs Brown to only increase his role slightly, so Brown has no reason to take full charge.

I know sharks had no bench players, but the second half was essentially played on the sharks side of the field. So Brown never had to fight to re-control the game and the result was always in our control. This could be seen as a good thing as Brown was willing to stick to the process and wait for sharks to fatigue. He followed the game plan which a cheif playmaker should do and didnt try score of every play and panic. The only thing that Brown needs to really take charge off is the kicking game when Moses is off the field. Playmaking and organising, he has a lot of help from Smith and Gutho due to his young age.

      • I agree with this the more we share the load the less teams can target a certain player.

Its a good reason why Moses's kicking game is more effective because Brown & Mahoney are picking there times when to do it as an example.

Much like playmaking duties when Moses went off both Brown and Gutho shared the load.We are playmakers by committee. Not really having a dominant halve so to speak.

      • Exactly! Think everyone hoped  to see Dylan take the reigns and that’s where we all were coming from.  None of us know what the instructions were when Mitch went down...but that’s exactly how it looked as you say in first papargrah. Dylan stay steady and Will and Guth stepped up. Dylan playing like Dylan allowed Will to slot in and use some of his playmaking talents, which he did really well. On that I don’t recall Will and Dylan pairing on field together before, I don’t have a good memory :( but even so Dylan’s composure helps any half to do their thing, as even Mitchell himself says. And Will did that too.
