Over the origin period we're seen numerous clubs who had players unavailable due to selection blood some really exciting prospests (ie Roosters, Panthers, Dragons, Broncos etc). We should be looking to purchase those players on the cheap offering them 1st grade on a permanent basis instead of staying at their current high-flying clubs waiting for the top squad to be injury ravaged to get another game.

Do we even have club scouts watching Intrust games? You need someone that has an eye for talent (BA doesnt).

  • I agree, but keep in mind it's easier to come up for one game and have a blinder than it is to play consistent footy in first grade week in week out. Take a look at Brodie Croft.

But the other argument is; well even our first grade players aren't consistent week in week out so what's the difference. Might as well bring in Luai and Croft for cheaper and get the same result or there abouts (last).
  • Agree there are plenty of players waiting to get a permanent crack at first grade. Also q cup. The broncos have 6-8 quality young forwards coming through. Wayne Bennett has said best he has seen. They won't be able to keep all of them.
  • I recently said this, you could assemble a side of reserve grade and under 20's players that could beat our current 1st Grade side.

Not only would they beat the side but they would also be a lot cheaper.

I remember Moi Moi was running around in reserve grade for the Rabbitohs before he came here and killed it.

Taupau is another one who was running around for a while in reserve grade at the Bulldogs before moving the the Tigers.

Brad Arthur thinks you have to have played rep footy before you can be considered a good player, the key is to identify the talent before they get to the rep stage and demand too much money.

    • If you think of the players that could of been approached at the right time you could have a possible side looking like this:

1- Ponga (Will demand more than $1mill a season next contract)

2- Fonua (More of a handful than any player we have)

      3- Gutherson

      4- Hayne

      5- G Jennings

      6- Norman

7- Williams (Good kicking game, better option than Moses)

8- Taupau (Approach him when playing reserve grade at Bulldogs)

9- Cook (Approach him when playing 2nd fiddle to Farah)

10- Pangai Jnr (Burst onto the scene as a promising jnr and got limited game time)

      11- Moeroa

      12- Niukore

13- Arrow (Was getting limited game time at the Broncos)

      14- Radley

      15- Terepo

      16- Mannah

      17- Mau

Jarrod Wallace was another that was unhappy at the Broncos.

    • I don't think we are that stupid missing on Tapau I think the Poodles lead us by the length of the street. How they let this guy go is beyond me.

  • The real question in essence is do we even have a "Crusher Cleal" type talent scout in our coaching arsenal, I suspect not.

    • Thats exactly it Bear and it's a thing you'd pretty much hope this review verifies.

People are so quick to throw this on BA but really it's the scouting departments job to bring this to his attention and then you act on it.

The idea a first grade coach should have to worry about these types of things aswell as know every last detail of his team is tough.

  • That is ba's biggest problem he can't identify talent. Then he pays overs for someone he thinks is better than what they are.
  • Bernie is our club scout . He was down at the Liverpool Eagles AFL game only a few weekends ago looking for both players and training staff .  When he was done scouting he returned to his car and then came back with his Head Of Football shirt on and signed them on the spot . Then he went back to the car and came back sporting his club boss Lowe’s suit and congratulated both the new recruits and himself and himself for the team effort in scouting and signing the new signings.

    • Awesome wizard hahah
