Why aren't the player managers accountable?

While I'm on a tear solving the world's problems, I would like the NRL to answer this question. Why are player managers not held accountable for TPA agreements.

So we have the Chris Sandow saga where media is informed of a $200k third party agreement that supposedly hasn't been paid. The NRL knows all the registered third-party agreements. In this instance, how does the NRL not approach the player manager with a "please explain". Are you saying you have negotiated a third-party agreement and it has not been lodged with us.

Given that clubs are not supposed to be involved with TPAs, surely it is up to the player manager to lodge any TPA. In the instance that any TPA is discovered, the player manager and that player manager's firm should be instantly de-registered.

Let's look at Wayne Beavis' quote this morning. "Mr Beavis said that the payments weren't registered "because I never got any paperwork off the club. That's not my fault. That's the club's fault," he said.

WTF? Beavis sent an invoice, that's paperwork. How he is not responsible for telling the NRL about this. How is Isaac Moses not the only person responsible for this TPA that he has obviously organised with Eddie Obeid.

Instead, we have a situation where the player managers feel so cocksure that they are quite happy to leak stories of third party payments not being paid to media to put pressure on clubs and generate sympathy for their clients. Certainly Parramatta officials weren't leaking these third-party payment stories, they had to be coming from the Sandow camp.

Now, I'm quite sure that players do absolutely nothing finance-wise without the say of their managers but if a manager pleads ignorance than in turn the player should be disqualified.

If player managers were scared stiff that any TPA violation got them disqualified do you think they would  be willing to take any risks? Would you organise a dodgy 20k payment for a client if it jeopardised your entire career.

Indeed, let's look at the current state of affairs as regard to our club. The Hayne story came out a month again, the papers have been talking about this TPA problem for Sandow and Hopoate for weeks. The Lussick apartment story came out last year or the year before. None of this is new. So why is the NRL only now saying it will be launching an investigation.

Is it because appearing on the SMH front page magically passed the "bad news" sentiment factor that finally encourages the NRL to get off its arse and do something about it. Were the back page stories in the Daily Telegraph not enough to prompt it to ask the very same questions. Why didn't it launch an investigation, asking Chris Sandow and Isaac Moses about unregistered contracts last week?

As we have seen through cases like the DCE affair, player managers do as they like in this sport. They exploit every rule to win every dime, they hold clubs to ransom, yet they appear to be the only ones who never come under real scrutiny. If the NRL was serious about the "integrity of the salary cap" they would ensure they every player manager knew that the moment anything dodgy was discovered they were gone.

  • Why aren't the player managers accountable?

pretty dumb premise.....the player managers job is to get as much money for the player as they can possibly get....anything less is the player manager being irresponsible

don't blame the Playa, blame the Game

The NRL are stupid enough to have loop holes for player mangers to exploit - guess what ? they will

All TPA need/should be only approved with Club and NRL permission BEFORE agreeing

    The reporting system is unprofessional

The whole thing is set up so that the smartest cheaters win

Too Bad Parra are DUMB CHEATERS !!!

As usual all blame is on NRL and Clubs way before any player manager

    silly blog

    • Tele you really should be on the team you supports' website because it is blatantly obvious you dont follow this club.

    • Tele, sorry I have to return serve. I think thats a really dumb response because you clearly didn't read the blog which is directed at the NRL.

Cracking down on player managers would fix most of the TPA agreements if it made the player manager's ultimately accountable.

Let's say Club X says to player manager, we've got this way to get $50k to top up your client's contract but its a bit dodgy. If the player manager thinks there is any chance that it will be discovered does he risk his entire business for his 20 per cent slice (or whatever it is) of $50k. I doubt it.

  • I completely agree Phil, the player managers are key in all aspects of these negotiations, they should be held accountable for their actions. They cant get away with increasing their earnings and then pushing all risk associated to the clubs.

  • I completely agree Phil as well. The players managers walk away from this shit smelling like roses.
  • What so the NRL isn't accountable, Wiz? I'm not "blaming" anyway. I've gone out hard with earlier blogs saying the club is accountable. I'm trying to propose ways that I believe the game I love can be better and not get dragged into these shit headlines.

  • Wiz how is Sharp responsible for rorts that Roy Spagnolo orchestrated?

Sharp has to now deal with the fallout of another chairmans rorts.

  • The whole system stinks and breeds poor governance and corruption. How many clubs are actually run professionally and in a proper business like manner? Not many.

Look at the calibre of people involved in running the NRL and the clubs and it is clear to see why. The game is riddled with unprofessional people at the administrative level, in club management (and the media too). These are multi million dollar business and should be run as such.

It is no surprise that the successful clubs like the Broncos and Souths are run by true business people.

Player management is an oligopoly with a few usual suspects (Beavis, Ayoub) etc. holding the lion's share of the market. Player management needs to be regulated and professionalised, so that it attracts the right quality and calibre of people - not the self interested, unethical people that we have today.

The players are young, mostly poorly educated and unprepared for the machinery of fame that confronts them when they crack first grade. They need good mentors that know how to support them to create personal brands with integrity. Instead look at the player managers that are there.

How can someone with any sound judgment organise third party payments from Obeid Jnr?  Further in this case it sounds like the players have also had the money funneled into failed property development schemes.

It's a rotten industry and it does not need to be. Getting rid of third party payments is just one step. The whole club and player management scene needs a clean out.

Unfortunately Parra is at the epicentre of this problem having been run by Spagnolo and co. I can't believe how many people on this site try to deflect it by blaming the media and saying "everyone does it". The fact is, our club has done it and is paying the price - we should aim to be above this.

    • It is my understanding RV that the investigation into the Broncos last year was the result of 3PPs which went sour. Getting rid of 3PP is probably as problematic as keeping them. For example is it fair to prevent a league player from doing paid TV ads. Is that a 3PP? The murky world of 3PP is why the NRL is Ostrich-like in avoiding a much needed investigation. .
