Who is afraid of what

I thought it appropriate to write to the 1 Eyed Eel Supporters Website and thank all the people that have supported my nomination to become an Independent Director of the Parramatta Leagues Club Board.

I enjoyed reading all the blogs and felt flattered to have so many people that I have never had the chance to meet, support me. To all those people I say thank you.

You now know what happened at the meeting, simply the members voted down all resolutions.

We can debate the intent of the Spagnolo and Fitzgerald factions in doing so and the purpose of deliberately setting out to ridicule the Chairman Steve Sharp in a very undignified and uneducated manner. (At times last night I felt we were in Odessa voting on the merits of a Russian takeover). However the outcome is worth reflecting on from a number of prospectives.

Firstly, I cannot imagine any professional organization anywhere in the world, where the members or shareholders would refuse to support a Code of Conduct for the Board to operate within. Why? Why did some Directors abstain from voting on this resolution.

This combined with the decision not to appoint an independent director makes me ask "who is afraid of what?".

Secondly, the outcome of yesterday's meeting was told to me on the weekend by Terry Leadbetter, when he phoned me and asked me to withdraw to save myself embarrassment. He told me all motions would be voted down in a s--- fight and Steve Sharp didn't know what he was in for. I have nothing against Terry but he knew the script.

The losers last night were the fans and the team. You see, teams that win titles have the support of the corporate sector; the more companies that support the team, the more sponsorship and third party agreements you can enter into.

When the big companies consider a relationship, they need to tick a number of boxes which include Corporate Governance and the Board. After last night's performance, I am sad to say it will be much harder to find companies that have confidence in our Board. Scott Seward's job just became much, much harder.

Further instability at Board level will make the quest for a title even harder.

Finally, the answer is simple - people that care, need to register to turn up and vote. The sad truth is last night 100 plus people voting in a block determined the outcome, this is less than half a percent of our fans.

If you care about our club get involved!

Regards

Bill Moss

  • Thanks Bill. Well said. I would like to assure people that this is actually Bill as well, in case you were a little sceptical!

  • Thankyou for spelling it out so clearly Mr Moss. It is truly disgraceful that any organisation would not have a Code of Conduct for their board. It seems that the term ethics and standards don't really sit well with some directors on our board as well as some ex-directors. As 1eyed members we can only hope that despite this set back you continue to be involved in our once great club. The club needs people like yourself who really do put Parramatta above self interest and self enrichment. I think I speak on behalf of a great number of members who would happily support you in our next election should you so wish to take part. Hopefully this can be a catalyst for real change in the way Parramatta Leagues and our football club is administered.

    Thank you

    Hamish

    • Hamish,

The current board was all in favour of the Code of Conduct. Supporters of past directors were opposed in a block.

  • Thanks Bill - would have loved to have attended and voted, but I had no idea it was on.

1Eyed Eel: Please put up an announcement on this site for the next one?

  • Oh wow, well done Bill for taking to the time to write this, very well said.

Personally I have known this site to hold some of the most passionatle eels supporters out there, people who love the club. So we all need to get down there and make sure our club is getting the future it deserves.

I am still a year off my right to vote but getting there.

  • Thanks for taking the time to write this out Bill. It is very frustrating to see personal interest placed above the team objective of challenging for a Premiership. I'll be signing up as a member of the Leagues Club this coming Monday before the Cronulla match.
  • I dare say that Roy is afraid of the current board moving the club forward, because if the club founders, he has a better chance of winning at the next election.

    This is, of course, deplorable.

    • Good Comment, but Roy will be ineligible untill November 2015

  • I saw the look on your face last evening Bill. You were obviously as ashamed as many of us were. Its often said that you have to hit rock bottom before you move upwards. I feel we may well have reached that point last night. People such as yourself need to be involved to drag us out of the current environment.  Stay strong in your support of The Mighty Eels.

    • Bill could show his involvement with the Club by joining it.
