The Westies

SIN BIN

Penrith supremo Phil Gould said the club had lodged a trademark application for ''Western Sydney Panthers'' as a ''safeguard'' for the future and has no plans to change its name. Gould revealed the club had also registered other names, including West Panthers, Western Panthers, and New West Panthers. The move ensures the club could use those names if they ever decided to expand beyond Penrith or merge with another Sydney club but Gould insisted there were no plans to do so. ''Western Sydney is a very fast growing area, it is very popular with sports and corporates and Penrith has got to look at its future, what area they represent and what club they want to be,'' Gould said. ''It is just something we discussed and we thought it was wise to register those names to ensure that if we ever chose to go that way or if ever the leaders of the club in the future chose to go that way it was available. We don't intend to use it at this time but it is there if every in the future it is needed.'' According to website Sportbizinsider.com.au, the Panthers lodged the trademark applications with IP Australian on May 7. The AFL has registered the name Western Sydney FC.

I was interested in this piece in the Herald today. I have some friends who mentioned the article and are Eels supporters as I am and have been since I was a kid. We started talking and were thinking that it really isn't good enough that between Penrith and Parra we have won 6 (4 for Parra and 2 for Penrith) premierships in 65 years. What if we created a new team called THE WESTIES. Not a merger, a new team. This is the team that represents us all. Perhaps play 6 games at Parra and 6 at Penrith with perhaps down the track a move to ANZ.

None of us hate the Panthers, in fact I have always had a soft spot for them. It's not like we are merging with the Dogs a team we just can't get on with. We would create a super team with 2 great leagues clubs behind us, imagine the sponsorships deals that we could get. We are the 3rd largest economy is Australia. We probably have around half of Sydneys population in our catchment area. Don't use EELS, Don't use Panthers...Don't use Blue & Gold, don't use Brown and White (or whatever they are nowadays), get new colours call us the Westies and be proud of them. This would take GWS head on. Get a high profile coach (perhaps Gus) and use Cleary as backs coach, Kearney as forwards coach. Tell the other clubs that they can't touch our kids for 10 years while we build a team, that way we can just use juniors no imports.

I reckon with this approach we could support a team that will win a premiership every 3 years or so, and give the heartland of League and Sydney a team to be proud of. We build a super tribe. We have a seige mentality, the Westies v The World. Us against Them. I actually think it would work.

I just find it hard when you think about it, that the 2 true Western Suburbs Teams (not south west) have only won 6 Premierships between them. We deserve better. The heartache is killing me and making me very disillsioned. Is this a way out? My heart says NO, but my head says YES... I think I could come around to it. And it is a perfect time now while both teams are down....

Anyway just a thought.

  • Pfft!!! I spit on your suggestion!

  • Penrith do not want to merge, they want to expand!!! If Parra merged I'd rename my website "History of the Parramatta Eels who are now dead and gone" NO MERGERS!!!!!!!

    • Definately not....my husband is a western subs supporter who has never really gotten over the merger with Balmain, I wrote the other day that Gould may be 'thinking it' in his funny lookin head but I would never want or accept this happening.

  • I would rather wait another 10 years for a Parra premiership than support another team, wouldnt have anywhere near the same passion.

  • "None of us hate the Panthers"

...say what?? My revoltion for them peaked in the ridiculous golden point game last year. They can merge with giant turd and F...Orf.

  • Penrith hate us so it won't ever happen. A merger that is.
  • Who wants to support a team with a poo brown jersey???????

Oh yeah, sometimes they exchange it for fluorescent pink !!!!!!!!

    • poo brown, poo brown

what does Gould have going down.

Imagine that as a team song - Oh yeah !!!
