The intent of the salary cap versus reality!

Hi All, so firstly, congratulations to the Roosters for winning the competition.  You were most definitely, the best team in the grand final and played your pants off.  So you should have ,along with a few other teams who seem to have a limitless ability to sign and retain whoever you want, when you want, without the NRL even blinking or twitching that something is astray.  In regards my comment about things being astray, my comments relate to the intention of the salary cap which was as I understand it, to serves two main purposes.  The first was to stop Clubs going broke through ridiculous player spending.  The second was to get teams on a relatively level playing field.

Now as I present this, just remember the proposed signing of Israel Folau, where the NRL placed their approved value on Folau and would not approve the amount that the Eels had proposed signing him for. So the NRL has therefore a position on player contracts and nominated their own value of the player concerned.   Then you have the instances, where the Eels players offered to take pay cuts to retain players and keep under the cap which were also declined by the NRL.

I will also comment that our Club is a rabble and their player management has been disgraceful. Nor do I excuse the cheating that was exposed during the cap investigation.

However, are the rules being applied equally by the NRL?  More importantly, are the rules in regards to salary cap management achieving what they were desire to do as outline above? Simply, no they are not.

Here is the prime example.  There is no questioning of the benefit of having proven business persons and connections in the Club, the intelligence of the Roosters Club in what they do, and that a winning culture attracts players. No argument whatsoever!  However, there is something clearly wrong with the NRLS player payment assessments and the get out of TPIS that allow the very thing the salary cap was supposed to achieve.  There is no way on earth NRL Clubs are playing on the same field as was intended when the cap was introduced.  I only highlight the Roosters due to the overall strength of the squad, but believe this can be demonstrated by a number of NRL squads in comparison to others.

2. Daniel Tupou ( State of Origin Rep/International Rep)
3. Latrell Mitchell ( State of Origin Rep/International Rep)
4. Joseph Manu
5. Blake Ferguson ( State of Origin/International Rep)
6. Luke Keary
7. Mitchell Aubusson ( NSW Country Rep)
8. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves ( International Rep)
9. Jake Friend (c) ( International Rep-Limited)

11. Boyd Cordner (c) ( State of Origin and International Rep)

13. Victor Radley
INTERCHANGE
14. Dylan Napa ( State of Origin and International Rep)
15. Zane Tetevano ( Lower level international rep)
16. Paul Momirovski
17. Ryan Matterson

Now, the questions I ask.  Are the current cap rules truly achieving what they were intended on doing?  Are all teams playing on a level field?  I THINK NOT!

  • And Cooper Cronk...

    • Yep, sorry. There goes over a million a season too!

      • Your point was already well made mate. The spare million dollar player just threw the highlighter across it all.

        • Cheers Buddy.  So why doesn't the NRL want to see it and fix it?

          • Because they don’t have any real power. Their administration reminds me of the substitute teacher that had to do lunchtime duty while the school bullies were managing the playground.

Did all they could to make sure nothing was addressed on their watch because they knew they couldn’t manage it.

  • Yes they have a great bunch of players who have come thru their system and have A. Managed to retain them despite their values going up and
B.retained them despite interest(higher offers) from other clubs. And
C.managed to add the 2 best halves and fullback to hit the market in the last 2 years. It's no fluke, money talks and the Roosters money always seems to talk louder than the rest.

    • Nice TAD, I am glad I am not the only one that can see the current NRL solution is not the fix they were after.

  • Thanks for your input.  Take aside the Izzy component, which I agree there are a number of versions, there is a problem and the NRL needs to address it.  Their own fix has not worked!

    • So you think all teams are playing under the same rules mate?  There is no doubt some Clubs are far better and working the current rules to the maximum and water smarter operators than our Club, but that is the exact point. The NRLs cap rules should be such that there is no option for working it, flexing it, manipulating it, if all Clubs are supposed to be on the same field.  If not, might as well go back as to how it used to be! Why even have the current cap rules?
