Slater sponsored by Channel 9. Why not us?

At Billy Slater's retirement press conference, he said he wanted to thank his sponsors and one of them was Channel 9. How many other players does 9 sponsor and do Fox also sponsor players with TPA's? If the broadcasters are offering TPA's to selected players, they can virtually decide who goes where. They could virtually decide the top 8 via selective TPA's so why on earth would they not offer TPA's to Eels players, as we generate the biggest ratings in the game and the more successful Parramatta is, the better the NRL go in general. It makes no sense to me at all that the broadcasters are not doing everything in their power to contribute to making Parramatta a strong team as they would get the benefits 10 fold from ratings.

  • "more successful Parramatta is, the better the NRL go in general" Gee the NRL must be stuffed since '09

  • Very good point PT, makes you wonder how much ch9 is tipping into some clubs whom they use their players for commentary etc.

Just imagine how much they are paying Thiaday!

I think this is the reason we see the same guys over and over on ch9 like thiaday and the storm players, because they are paying them and want their moneys worth.

  • I call bullshit. How many retired broncs and now the chosen few get the regular brown paper bag of a job with Fox or Nine.....way too many too be just coincidence.
  • Yes fair point; have you also noticed the push in media (TV) of certain Immortals / potential immortals who are also in our faces on TV? Maybe its me being cynical; guys like B Clyde would have as much standing as Immortal as one who received the award the other week; heck even Sterling and S Mortimer could be argued for as well.

  • Why is the contracted broadcaster of the game sponsoring individual players? And how is it different to TPA's, which aren't meant to be arranged by clubs anyway?
    • Think of it more as a second job to selected players. They are contracted for an agreed amount of money, to make appearances on certain shows as a "league expert" and insiders look. NRL 360 on fox does the same with Luke Lewis and Josh Reynolds, who both are contracted and paid to appear once a week on the show to offer a players perspective on current topics. Would you do it if you werent being paid? Would you offer any current Eels player money for their opinion? (I wouldn't)

      • oh and the payments and contracts are all declared to and approved by the NRL. This really is a non-topic.

      • Corey Norman actually has a contract with BSB and previously had one with Fox until his drug charges.

    • I would say you are looking into it way too much. The players who seem to score these gigs, are / were greats of their time / long servants of the game / have a cult following / have big personalities or an intense understanding of the game.

Name which current eels players fit that mould? Our high profile players such as Norman and Hayne, arguably struggle to string two or more sentences together and have previously spoken about their distaste for the media in general. Certain past players like fui fui and hindmarsh would make frequent media appearances. This conspiracy theory that we are treated poorly without justification is growing old. If we had, coherent, genuine, likeable superstars I guarantee we would get more air time.
