Open Training Session

Got there a bit early and was able to see the warm-up the guys were doing. There was a heavy focus on professionalism and the bloke running the warm-up was yelling at the boys to warm up properly as they aren't just warming up their body they're warming up their technique. When one of the boys picked up a footy he was quick to get onto them to get rid of it and have 100% focus on technique. Then it was the on to 13vs13 training session. In the blue team it seemed like the first grade team. When the blue team first lined up I noticed that Hoppa was playing on the right wing with Robinson at fullback but then that changed later on with Hoppa going to fullback and Robinson playing right wing. I didn't notice who was playing left centre but Semi was exclusively playing left wing. Sandow and Norman were getting on each side of the field. Most importantly there was a high importance from BA about Pauli Pauli pushing up in support. It was great to see, he was almost exclusively standing behind him barking orders for him to push harder. Now for the pink team. The most interesting set-up was Ryan Matterson was playing fullback. The only thing that was hampering him was high kicks, he fumbled a few times but in attack he looked comfortable on sweeping plays. ZDC seemed to play the dominant half role within the team except for the kicks which were taken by Luke Kelly. Finally, on my way out I spoke to Richie Fa'aoso (who didn't train) what was going on with his clearance and he told me he got the okay from 2 different doctors and then the NRL said they want a 3rd doctor to give their clearance. If anyone has any questions I have no problem with answering them.

  • how did morgan and takarangi look?

    • Like Morgan. He hit a few holes, actually I think he was playing left centre at times.

Takairangi looked good. He interchanged at right centre with Beau Champion for the 1st half and then for the most of the 2nd half. He looked a bit slimmer than what I was expecting. The session seemed to be focused on forwards so the backs weren't able to get their hands on the ball much.

  • Thanks for your input as always, Ham. I anticipate your thoughts as eagerly as Phil's on all things Parra and footy. Keep up the great work!
    • Cheers Rob.

  • Saw gowie after it ham which side?
    • He was starting prop for the Blue team. Junior Paulo wasn't training.

  • is there a preferred centre pairing yet?

    • I don't think so, seems to be between Morgan, Takairangi, Champion, and Toutai atm.

  • Blue team: Peats and De Gois were interchanging.

    Pink Team: Pritchard

  • I read Ryan Matterson as Ryan MORGAN the first time! Wow, what a difference! Considering the common use of today's fullback as a 'second five-eighth' he should fit in perfectly. Should he make the first grade team, that is. Would be very interesting to see, remember, GI was a 5/8 for Melbourne more than a few times.
