NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley has finally clarified his stance on Sydney's major sporting stadiums, saying Labor would not knock down and rebuild either the Sydney Football Stadium or the Sydney Olympic Stadium. When the Gladys Berejiklian Government announced its $2 billion stadiums plan in November, Mr Foley strongly criticised the amount of money being spent and focused his attack on the plan to rebuild the football stadium. But until now he had refused to declare if he thought Sydney Olympic Stadium should be knocked down, saying he would release Labor's full policy before the election and "all options were on the table".Today he spelt out his position more clearly."We won't be knocking down and rebuilding either Moore Park or Olympic Park Stadium because there's much greater priorities for NSW," Mr Foley said.He said he has always believed there is room for a "sensible refurbishment" of Sydney Olympic Stadium, but did not elaborate on how much he would be willing to spend.Meanwhile, the State Government will be forced to turn over documents relating to its stadiums plan to the Upper House. The Government did not oppose a call for papers motion moved by Labor, which orders the Government to table any document relating to the demolition and rebuild of the stadiums and any legal advice or correspondence with the sporting codes. The Government will now have three weeks to hand over the documents to Upper House MPs to scrutinise.'We'll take them to court' if they hide: LaborLabor argued the motion was necessary to get answers out of a secretive government. But the Leader of the Government in the Upper House Don Harwin said the Government was not worried about producing the papers because it had nothing to hide."The more information that is in the public domain, the more it will be absolutely clear that the proposal on stadiums is the right direction for the NSW Government to take," Mr Harwin said.Mr Foley said if the Government failed to turn over crucial documents, his party would pursue the issue further."If they want to hide behind fake claims of cabinet in confidence we will take them to court," Mr Foley said."We won't stop until there's proper accountability here."The business case for the Government's stadiums plan is yet to be presented to Cabinet.

  • Just as well Parra stadium is underway. If Foley gets his way we'll have to put up with ANZ and SFS for decades to come. I reckon the business case he is seeking will shut him up though.

    • Not likely. The NSW Labor Party have about as much credibility as 3P, or Parra First. Proven to be corrupt and have delivered nothing for NSW in decades
    • Nope. He's a part-time Opposition Leader bereft of any real ideas.

He's filling the seat until someone better comes along, so unfortunately that means he's likely to have the gig for some time...

  • This is all about politics, both the State Labour and Federal Labour are going into the policies of class warfare and envy politics

this is why nothing gets done in this State, we spent all the Carr years building no roads or infrastructure ( how may times did he announce the building of the Sydney/Qld freeway without doing anything)and NSW went backwards. Finally things are going ahead, and we see the statements like schools and hospitals , when significant amounts are actually being spent. A few years of inconvenience to set the city up, and the NIMBYs are out in force.

If Gladys can't put a decent argument to put this to bed, then heaven help us, we will go into reverse.

I read that the State is spending over $200 billion on the very things that Foley is using his argument for, what a vacuum exists in politics, all about being elected not what's best for NSW

No wonder my kids and others are looking to move to Qld over the near future.

    • Its not worth it dude...trust me.
Brainwashing every day on television. Nothing happens anywhere in the world period. Its qld 1st 2nd 3rd.
    • We are no better up here mate. We have a shithouse state government and a debacle of an opposition.

  • “Im against any progress whatsoever. In fact take all those cranes down” he said.
  • Cmon Gladys you have so much ammo you could bury this imbecile. The state is once again the nations leading economy. So much infrastructure going on, so much investment. Start spruiking this stuff Gladys.
