The Pirtek Parramatta Eels today paid tribute to one of its longest serving staff members in NRL assistant coach Matt Cameron, who departs the Club this week to take up a role with the Penrith Panthers.
Cameron has held a variety of coaching and player development roles with the Eels over the past 15 years, having coached the Club’s Reserve Grade, Jersey Flegg and Toyota Cup sides at different stages between 2004 and 2011.
More recently, Cameron played a dual role in overseeing the Club’s talented youngsters as Elite Development Manager – where he took a lead role in running the Eels Academy, a specialised development unit for the Club’s elite young players – and as NRL assistant coach to Stephen Kearney.
Cameron will join the Panthers from next week as their High Performance Manager.
Kearney today paid tribute to Cameron’s significant contribution to the Eels:
“Matt’s overseen the development of some of this Club’s top players over a long period of time and he has certainly been a big part of the success we’ve had in the past 18 months with the Eels Academy,” Kearney said.
“He’s excited about the opportunity he’s been given and everyone here wishes him well in his new role.”
Cameron said he departed the Eels with more than a decade of great memories and with the knowledge the elite development pathways he has helped build remain a focus of the Club’s forward plans.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of my 15 years at the Eels and been really fortunate to work with some great people during my time here,” Cameron said.
“Being able to work with senior players like Nathan Hindmarsh and Luke Burt and be involved in the development process of guys like Ben Smith, Tim Mannah and Matt Keating has been a highlight.
“I wish the Club every success going forward.”

Who filled the position of Sean Burns as well?
What is he going to Penrith to do? Also, damn Penrith taking our staff, first it was the Horo's now it's Matt Cameron
What affect will this have upon the Eels now, if any ?
I heard Cameron was pushed out because the toyota cup are going terrible.
He isn't the coach but he is in charge of junior development, and he used to coach them with a quite terrible record also.
I've also heard that Kearney didn't rate him as assisstant coach and didn't let him in on any info going around.
If Cameron was bad in kearneys eyes he must have been bloody horrible
I believe Tony Wignell is now our Strength and Conditioning Coach.
Hayden Knowles had this to say about Matt
@HaydenknowlesMatt Cameron one of the best operators you'll find. Panthers gain.
