Maguire is NOT the answer...

Let me start by saying this is not a BA appreciation blog.

Do we need a new coach with new ideas and a plan to build for now and the future.... Yes.  However Michael Maguire is not the answer.

2014 Maguire ended the 40 odd years pain for the long suffering Rabbitohs fans.  He did this with a no nonsense, hard nosed approach on and off the field.  The forward pack dominated and a Burgess dynasty started.  As with premiership winning clubs there was turn over and he attracted the likes of Glenn Stewart to the frey.  Within 2 years there was disharmony, a lack of cohesion and the wheels feel off.  This was due to Maguires inability or unwillingness to change.

Yes he bought the Rabbitohs a title but unlike coaches like Bellamy or Flanagan lost the dressing room and lost his job.

The results may differ but there are similarities between BA and Madge.  Why would we want a new coach that is so alike?

Look at Souths this year, a rookie coach, minimal roster changes and unearthing talent like Murray and Rennings and they are top of the comp and on a 9-0 run.

So what should we do?

We need a new and forward thinking coach, devoid or old school mentalities and an inability to change.  We need a rookie that wants to make his mark and respects the club.

I would love the see the walker brothers, Demitriou or a Dymock even.

Lets not fall into the same trap and employee a 1990's coach for a 2019 team.

  • I will take anyone. Just get rid of that imbecile coaching them this year
  • If Maguire gets us a premiership don’t care what happens after that
    • A 3 year stint for Maguire might be all we need. If nothing else will drastically improve our roster for a new coach in the 4th year.

  • I’m really each way on this. On the one hand I think we need a disciplinarian but on the other I agree we need someone who is taking the team in new directions in attack. I wouldn’t be going for maguire either he’d lose the dressing room pretty quickly. Dymock is a smart operator but could he keep the egos of some of our players in check? Not sure. On balance I think I’d be leaning more towards a dymock type than Maguire though. We need someone fresh and innovative. Our players are stale and the last thing they need is another old school type
  • Maguire wouldn't be my first choice but I would have him here in a heart beat over the Bush league coach.

  • I see Maguire being another Hagan.
  • Maguire GF winning team full of rookies.

He did not buy a grand final.

    1 Greg Inglis            Superstar

2 Alex Johnston     Rookie developed Maguire
3 Dylan Walker       Rookie developed Maguire
    4 Kirisome Auva'a  Extremely average
    5 Lote Tuqiri           Retirement player
6 Luke Keary            Rookie  develped madge
7 Adam Reynolds    Rookie developed  madge
8 George Burgess     Star but untried in the NRL
    21 Apisai Koroisau     Rookie
    10 Dave Tyrrell             Average
    11 Ben Te'o                   Good signing
12 John Sutton (c)        Got better under Madge
    13 Sam Burgess              Star

    Interchange
    14 Jason Clark         Average
    15 Kyle Turner           Average
    16 Chris McQueen     Maguire developed
17 Thomas Burgess    Untried in the NRL

    I rest my case

    SIGN MADGE NOW.

HE DEVELOPED A BUNCH OF KIDS TO WIN A GF.

    • He also didnt evolve.

What makes the likes if Bellamy great evolution.

His style is past and he doesnt know how to change just like our current situation

    • Those Burgess boys , Inglis and Teo were the difference that got that team over the line .

  • I agree with this blog.

There is a reason or reason's that Madge hasn't coached for awhile.

His stint at the Rabbitohs was generally successful, but I believe that his GF win covered a lot of turmoil and inevitably a can of worms.

Is he the answer for the eels looking long term? No.

I'd actually prefer to see Arthur see out his contract which is only one more year, with all the support and staff HE chooses and see what happens. I still believe that BA is a decent coach, but there simply must be a few problems which have gone on behind the scenes which the average nuffy supporter are not in the know about.

A coach and players don't just forget how to perform overnight. There must be far more to our problems than the coach lost the playing group and I'm only guessing here, but I have a feeling that Corey just may have something to do with this. I'm only summising of course.
