Now, I could just post the entire article itself here in full as text format but that would defeat the purpose of visiting the website in which the content originated from.

So, I'll make you do the hard work and visit the site and then you can discuss the content from the article here in this blog.

The entire article basically looks at all 16 NRL teams and how they have utilised the Holden Cup as a means of promotion and transition for their young, budding players.
It looks at the total number of players to have played Holden Cup for those teams, how many of them have gone on to play first-grade and the total percentage for each of those teams in relation to how successful their transitioning has been.

All active first-graders that have played for each team in the Holden Cup are then listed.

Obviously, nothing is flawless, so if you not any inaccuracies or any inefficiencies, then let me know and I can fix it. In fact, I would appreciate it should you notice one.

Here it is, the link, so enjoy:

  • While not everyone is going to crack first grade, those statistics are shocking to say the least. Not only for parramatta but for whole NRL in General.

It shows how much of a flop the U20s competition has been, its really sent the NRL backwards. Alot of the names on the list to have cracked first grade havent played the NRL for over 5 or so years and havent played over 10 first grade games

The old system was working fine i really havent seen a standout player graduate from any u20s team. You can argue barba but his career has been a mess which takes away from it. I really cant say any of those graduates live up the development of the Folaus, Haynes and Thurstons under the old system

    • The thing is, though, even if I went through the old Flegg system, it'd be quite similar.

A ton of players are never going to be up to that level and so, so many fall through the cracks.
The issue is that there's no bulletproof system. Players simply have to perform otherwise they don't take that next step.

Considering how many of our players have amounted to nothing or gone elsewhere, I'm actually surprised we're in 5th and as high as we are.

  • Manly 10%, and we thought we had problems, I am surprised by Penrith too at just 17%.

    • Penrith's issue hasn't been the quality, it's been the quantity.
They've had so many players come through the system and so the overall number that make the transition to FG is rather stagnated because of the number of successful juniors.

  • Very interesting read Rick, thanks for that

    • S'all good, Snake.

Contemplating one for the NSW Cup as well as there are plenty of fringe players out there as well.

    • As is the case for a lot of teams. A lot of the players in that list went on to play fewer than 50 first-grade games which tells you that they only played out of necessity more than anything else.

  • Similar to the NBA, NFL model, Precious.

Has some merit and there are some aspects I'd like to see implemented into the NRL even if not in full but even as early as today, Todd Greenberg said he won't budge and the cap will stay as it is.

  • Penrith on 17%... Thats low for a club with so many juniors..

    • And I think that's why it's so low, Y2 - too many juniors.

The talent pool is so vast for them and there are so few spots to fit all the players in. It's the downfall of having such a productive talent pool.
