IMO the guy never gave 5/8 a real shot he always wanted to be fullback tha why he displaced Luke Burt to Wing the guy was oozing confidence in the latter half of the year and Im sure if he wanted to have a crack at 6 again he would kill it!!! BUT thats if the guy wants to play 6!!!!
And in saying all this he played 6 when the side was going nowhere the forwards were getting humiliated by the opposition and his own personal form was crap
Hayne changed during Origin IMO he was the best player and should have been awarded MOS soon after that the eels changed the forwards thx to the big FUIFUI express got some attitude about them and killed the opposition they played a team thrived on each others confidence and the rest as they say is history!!!!!!!
He was a complete failure at number 6. Anderson didn't want him to be a creative half, he wanted him to be a stand-off who did more running. He couldn't really do either, and had far more pressure on his shoulders. Plus, the team was going bad and Finch didn't do much to relieve Hayne's pressure.
When he moved to fullback, he was given so much more freedom, both creatively and also in terms of running.
We saw ourselves which was more successful. Hayne at 5/8 is a complete disaster that should not be seen again.
Hayne was not in the same form , his movement was alot more restricted , Number 6 isnt right for hayne . Jarryd is the best when he has space to plan and room to move .
You wont see him back at 6 . He proved last year that he is a specialist number 1 . And my honest belief is he is by far better than slater , who had a few great games . Hayne has brought back the days of belcha , gary jack and many other brilliant fullbacks , but hes taken it to a new level . Will anyone stop the Hayne train in 2010 NOWAY .
i wouldn't necessarily say it was a failure. Hayne himself has said numerous times that the skill and positional sense he developed from 5/8 helped contribute to his unbelievable form in the home stretch of the season, so no i'm not willing to say it was a complete failure even though his form was nowhere near his best.
Even if he could play there , creating a vacancy at fullback would only fall to 2 candidates - Inu or Burt. And having Hayne at 6 would create more headaches with what to do with Morts.
I think what your question provides is how versatile the team really is. We have a fullback that could play anywhere from number 1 to number 6. We have a Lock who could equally fit into number 6, and 6's who can play 7. You could keep going all day and come up with more combinations than a chinese takeaway menu.
If I could add to your question for more informed members to answer, is there any other team who could shift so many players if the situation arose during a game and continue on ? Lets say the Cowboys lost Thurston early in a game ? Or the Bronco's lost Lockyer , Dragons with Soward.... maybe there is and I am just 1 eyed in opinion.
plain and simple answer to this is..IMO:
Hayne Is a born ball runner.. but to be able to run he needs space , hence full back was why he dominated so much and failed at 5-8..
What's best for the team is Hayne at fullback and we have coverage in the halves with KK Morts and Robbo. At the time though DA wanted Mateo back at lock and thought the team was best served with Hayne at 5/8. So it probably was a failure in the end but alls well that ends well.
