Why chase outside the club when Mahoney has shown he can play ok? I would see him being our 9 going forward but have Pritchard as back up for him.
I see no reason why we should be chasing too many players from outside the club, rather than getting some strength in various areas.
As for Luke, he is 32 next year and what benefit that with another older player, he has some go in him but for how long? and will he really improve the side?
Luke could be a short term upgrade on king and kaysa while mahoney gathers some more experience. Depends what his asking price is. 1 year deal could be a go
To get him it would be for 2019, for me we would be better off with Farah for this year and could keep him to mentor our 9's, he is a player that could be signed now but Luke would be kept in NZ under his contract.
If he was released by the Warriors and the eels had to take up his payment, he was signed on a pretty decent coin, a reason he is not going to be signed next year again and he would be looking for another big money deal, let him go to SL.
2018 is done and dusted for us no point in bringing over players this year. Start fresh in 2019 and bring Luke over to mentor the 9's if we are looking for an established hooker to fill that role. Plus Farrah is a cancer.
Farah is only a cancer if let to be one. How many on this site bag the club and coach for signing old players, Luke coming here would want big money, and I doubt the warriors would let him go this year anyway, so signing either player should only be for the remainder of this season.
Mahoney can only get better and Pritchard signed for one year would provide for backup. There are players that are within our ranks already that can step up if given the chance.
Id rather see us promote from within also but I dont want to bank on Mahony after one game.
Hooker aside, there are bigger holes in our roster we need to address. Namely our forwards. If we sign another prop to partner Paulo such as Pangai junior, Tapou, possibly Klemmer, we might see the hookers / halves we already have improve behind the go forward they are creating.
I look at our off contract list and the only names that jump out at me are Marata and George Jennings. Hayne and T rex are risks id be willing to take also providing Hayne continues to play well and T rex remains on a peanuts contract. We should have a lot of spare cash to beef up our pack though.
Our very first recruitment rule should be a golden rule - NO ONE over 30 years of age, no matter how good they have been unless that player is an immortal.
We have been the dumping ground for old retired players for far too long.
