Eels want salary compensation for Scott

  Timestamp Wed 23 May 2018, 12:00 PM

Parramatta will approach the NRL about the possibility of medically retiring veteran forward Beau Scott after he suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Warriors last week.

The Eels will ask whether the ruptured ACL, that is expected to bring an end to Scott's career, is classified as a career-ending injury.

If the NRL deems the injury to be career-ending, it would give the Eels significant salary cap relief.

Scott is on a back-ended deal with the Eels worth in excess of $600,000 for this season and given there are more than five months remaining in the rugby league calendar year, Parramatta may have $300,000 extra to spend if the injury is deemed to be career-ending.

Opinion divided in Blue & Gold ranks

Still on the Eels, and there appears to be a power struggle brewing at the club. There's a differing of opinions internally over the structure of the football department.

It's become clear the best structure involves having a general manager of football, especially when you consider three of the top four teams in the NRL all have one in place.

The Panthers have Phil Gould, the Rabbitohs have Shane Richardson and the Warriors have Brian Smith.

The Eels don't have one. The club is in the process of working towards appointing one, but who they should sign remains a hot topic inside the club.

NRL.com understands CEO Bernie Gurr wants to continue to have a huge impact on the direction of the football department, but some staffers believe it would be more beneficial to appoint another person and let Gurr focus on the business.

  • I’d like to know how much say Gurr is having in recruitmen and team decisions . He seems to be running the place like a kid protecting his Dollarmite account .

    • Well he’s head of Football and the CEO  so he has the ultimate say.

      • Signing off on a coaches decision is one thing , maybe having a little input to that decision is also acceptable since ultimately your head is on the block with his . But not giving the coach the autonomy to make the decision is a different ball game .

Ever since the Hayne signing I’ve had a feeling that Bernie may be over reaching , and that’s why I’ve refrained from jumping on the sack BA bandwagon just yet . For all we know Gurr is spoiling the broth and articles like this are kinda leaning that way .

    • How the hell would you ave any idea what burnie is or is not doing.
  • Why would Gurr be used for more than just the business side lol wtf does he know about the actually footy side of things. He just lived in the states for years and probably watched minimal to no games within that time.

      • Very funny and agree Poppa.

Gurr knows what good looks like and that may not be adding another Management layer just because 3 out the 4 top four clubs this week have a GM Football.

      • Paul Osbourne has even better credentials  than Bernie if you want to put it like that Poppa . How’d he go ? I’d suggest even someone who’s had experience on any local Jnr sports club board would’ve been able to run things better than him and I’d bet we have a few members here that’ve held that position .

Its been proven time and time again that all the bells and whistles on your resume mean jack shite .  How many threads would you like me to dredge up with people tossing off to our latest well credentialed staff member ?   Bernie’s had a very long break from the game , a very long break .  Imagine having a Mechanic that hasn’t worked on cars in the best part of 2 decades all of a sudden decide he’s going to open up his own mechanics shop and work on people’s cars himself .  No thanks .

the games changed , coaches methods have changed , players minds have changed , the whole system has changed so much since he was involved with The Roosters . And even then the jury’s out on how much he actually “ ran “ things over there .

      • Poppa I’m more concerned as to why Bernie would know it’s best practise and not gone in hard and immediate. Remember the article I posted last week for the NFL style overseer...just exactly that. Bernie and Max can do all right arsing and  the CEOing they like but quite obviously bernie doesn’t give a shit long term for this club.

      • Pop's since you have a hard on for Bernie Gurr tell us what has actually achieved as a Football administrator? While the at it tells us what makes Bernie such a wonderful CEO for Parra ?

      • So? Still doesn’t make him qualified to be appointed Head of Football.

He was CEO of the Roosters over 15 years ago when Gus Gould was in charge. Since that time he hasn’t lived in Australia and has been a CFO (not CEO) of 2 US businesses completely unrelated to sport.

A lot has changed in 15 years in this game both on and off the field.

So he’s more qualified than everyone on this site? That’s your measure?

The fact is there’s nothing whatsoever in Bernie’s resume’ that suggests he is in anyway qualified to be the head of Football. And his performance in that role these past 18 months proves that fact. Either he appoints an experienced and qualified head of Football or we get a new CEO who can get on with putting the right structures in place.
