Did Hasler screw the Dogs?

Many on here have taken the overly simplistic view that Hasler single-handedly destroyed the Dogs.

Does any coach anywhere have single, sole control over its spending and finer details of the contracts? If that were the case BA should be sacked for the Watmough & Foran contracts alone. It just luck that we're still not paying Watmough in 2018. But it's fair to acknowledge that not BA but also Seward and Sharp had their fingerprints all over those contracts. Remember the $1m get out clause for Foran.

Dib at the Dogs spent up big because he overestimated the increase to the salary cap.

Hasler was spending big on football operations and this saw him fall out with officials. But he wasn't sending the club up the creek, that was Raelene and Dib.

  • Hasler and Dib together had complete control. All coaches are going to want to sign all the best players for whatever money in order to win. It’s up to the Board to manage that.

Hasler did similar at Manly. It’s just what he does.

Maybe it’s valid. Maybe opening a Premiership window is a legitimate strategy. But it screws your salary cap for many years.

    Yes Hasler screwed the Dogs

    • The down years are less than the good ones. I'd say most Parra fans would take the records of the Dogs and Manly over the last 10 years in a heartbeat.

      • It’s not a choice between only Hasler’s history and our past 10 years. It’s about setting up our club for the best possible future. I just don’t think you need to screw the club long term to do that.

A robust structure, well resourced with high caliber individuals is a better road imo

    • Well Mutts then BA should of been sacked for signing two players that he knew had injury and mental health problems which cost the club dearly .

    • This is exactly it you have to be setup correctly off the field to be winning on it.

Its not a secret here but for the most part over the last decade Parra has been setup to fail because of what's gone on off the field.

The idea that any coach is going to come into this joint and just click there fingers and everything's good is laughable.Right now I think BG is just positioning the club to be successful for the long haul.No more quick fixes.

With regards to the coach I think we need to stick and hope the above marries up with long term success not just looking for tomorrow but having an actual solid plan that spans the horizon.

To improve the onfield right now BA needs help and the players need to step up and take responsibility for performance also.

  • And just look at his record: From 2005-2011 he had Manly playing finals every year, they made 3 grand finals (winning 2).

The Dogs played finals five years straight (including 2 grand finals).

In 13 years, Hasler coached teams missed the finals only twice.

He is head and shoulders above the rest of the currently unemployed coaches being bandied around.

    • Ricky Stuart’s record in his 8 or so years is pretty much on par with Haslers . Hasler merely had the players to get the job done .  Even at Canterbury there wasn’t a player he couldn’t have . You’d expect the guy to have a decent record .  We all know what went on at Manly , they fucking cheated and were lucky enough not to get caught .  At one stage every man and his dog was “ signing for less to play for Des “

If we didnt get caught , BA would probably be sitting up next to Bellamy right now as the biggest cocky in the cage. Imagine what would’ve been built by now on that roster . He could’ve taken his pick of whatever player went on the market .

      • Stuart's not even close Wiz. He was gifted a GF side at the Roosters and appeared in 3 straight and he then took them on a ride to the bottom. Hasler took over Manly when they hadn't played finals in years.

Sticky then took the Sharks to the bottom, a spoon with us and has made the finals once in his 4 years at the Raiders (probably 1 in 5 at the end of this year).

        Doesn't compare.

      • Wiz you make out that Hasler took over some start studded side , Hasler built that manly team and set the winning culture they had had for many years .   He also took the dogs to 2 grand finals and only missed the finals once , I'd much rather a coach like Des than the the current piece of crap we have now .

    • I totally agree we need a hasler brian smith or McGuire as head coach not sure if we could attract any of these men as max donnelly and bernie gurr are not going to open the cheque book on operational cost .until we become a fully professional footy club the same problems are going to continue the club is semi professional at best .what professional club has its training based out of demantables there half arsed gym in demantables no wonder why we will not attract quality players coaches to the club .until we spend money on having the best facilities and higher standards of professionalism its going to be an uphill battle to attract any 1st class coach or player to the club .
