Bennett V Kearney, spot the difference

Rewind back to when Kearney took the job at Parra. remember the roster that he had available, along with the culture, board and financial issues at our great club. As soon as he arrived there was a number of over the hill players brought in all who we scoffed at and in most cases rightly so. I wont bother going through the list and Im not sure exactly how many were actually Kearney signings but we all know who the players were. He changed the style of play, sacked or demoted players sacked the coaching staff, started the junior program, went on search and recruited some big $$$ signings. A total clean out avoiding throwing out the baby. No doubt our onfield performance are shit house but I can honestly say i am proud of how our coach holds his team and his beliefs together, say what you will about him but he remains calm, takes responsibility and and is always available to defend our club throughout the media.

Now look at Bennett, an almost identical situation faces him at the moment with the Knights and look what his reaction has been. Bring in whatever players he can get in on small contracts and win as many as he can until he can get the team he wants. He has the balls like Kearney to sacrifice immediate victories for the greater good and put his neck on the line each week in the belief of his own abilities. Everyone has been asking what has kearney learnt under Bennett and Bellamy yet it is happening right before our eyes. We are not Brisbane, Melbourne or St George but we can become a Hybrid of them all because Kearney is the link between those three clubs with his close association with Bennett and Bellamy over the years. Keep your enemies close.

I feel the losses as much as anybody but we would be mad to lose Kearney now, it'd be like quitting 40km into a marathon.

Stick strong.

    • One has achieved everything, the other has achieved nothing.
  • Interesting, Cumberland Thrower.

You raise some good points, but I don't think you tell the full story.

The bottom line is that we are 1 from 11 this year, have major trouble attracting any signings and are a VERY BORING team to watch. We are not up to NRL standard. I'll never know what portion of that is attributable to SK.

Also, he bought an off-the-cuff style halfback on huge $$$ for a style of play that apparently does not accommodate it. Why?

In any event, I certainly hope he turns things around in good time.

  • The full Parra story would require a novel but its just a train of thought. You will never agree with any coach 100% on signings, style, selections etc. No doubt it has to happen on the field sooner rather than later but Kearney has had to tear down first prior to "re-building". He is only 18months in.

    • So how many months in the job would you give him to get the team to a standard that no longer qualifies as embarrassing?

  • Wiz, that's pretty hard to argue with.

  • X 100

  • If we knew what the plan was, what he is trying to achieve we could stick strong. Otherwise you might as well quit at 40km into your marathon otherwise you'll be herded over a cliff.

  • does that mean we will become a club who cheats the salery cap, chokes in golden point games and will only play on friday nights.!!!
