Ange Postecoglou reveals coaching future
SOCCEROOS coach Ange Postecoglou fronted the media to end speculation about whether he’ll be going to the World Cup or not.
SOCCEROOS coach Ange Postecoglou won’t be going to the World Cup in Russia next year after revealing he’s stepping down from his role.
He announced his decision at a press conference on Wednesday morning alongside FFA boss David Gallop.
There has been much speculation over what the coach would do ahead of the 2018 tournament after he refused to confirm he would lead the Socceroos to Russia.
Postecoglou spent Tuesday in discussion with the FFA before attending last night’s Cup final between Sydney FC and Adelaide United, where he was spotted talking to FFA chairman Steven Lowy.
Lowy and Gallop were eager to retain Postecoglou in the job after he led Australia to the World Cup with a 3-1 win last week over Honduras, concluding a marathon 22-match qualification process.
But the 52-year-old often hinted at grievances in the role that ultimately prompted him to walk away.
In an interview on Sunday on ABC television, Postecoglou said he “fluctuated” in his thinking.
“There’s ... a whole range of reasons, some are fairly personal, some are private, some are just me as a person, and some are professional, that all need to be put into place,” he said.
“What’s going to be good for the team is also a consideration.”

I wish that was true Wiz; just heard it on the radio. I am intrigued why he has quit tbh. But he must have something up his sleeve.....Brad too!!
After all the effort to get them there its weird that he's not at least coaching the team through the world cup and quit once the tournament ends. Something strange is going on here.
If they did nothing it would merely mean 3 straight losses and out the back door of the WC. We limped across the line to WC qualification. A change was necessary.
Fair enough but why not take the team through the tournament itself seeing he got them there? He can sign for anyone he wants after that. Having one coach for years then having to get accustomed to a new one as the tournament starts surley has to have a disabling effect of the side.
Three millions dollars for two seasons in Asia or go to a World Cup? Hmmmmm
So the Asian league runs during the world cup?
No idea mate. That is what is rumoured. If I was a Club paying 3 million, I would expect sole focus of the coach.
The incoming coach has to understand they dont have enough time to completely overhaul how socceroos play and should keep some of existing structures, but should be able switch it up enough to make the team more unpredictable.
