Alfie Langer: Sportsmanship or gamesmanship

I want your opinion on what went down last night when Alfie assisted the NSW captain.NSW were defending a 4 point lead with 11 men when Boyd Cordner went down. In my opinion Alfie's motives, in no particular order, were:- Ensure Boyd's well being.- Keep Boyd out of the defensive line for as long as possible to give QLD the attacking numbers advantage.- Convince the referee that Boyd should come off the field for the remainder of the game for a HIA.Sportsmanship or gamesmanship? For those interested here's the article that provoked this post:https://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/allan-langer-lends-a-hand-to-opposition-captain-boyd-cordner-in-origin-ii/news-story/59ba97861dca4a366174096fd9a5a8c0

  • Bit of both . Probably in the order you’ve put it in .  Not too sure about the HIA one though as it give NSW a free fresh set of legs .

  • The players wellbeing nothing more nothing less.

    • This. 100%

      • Don’t be so sure fellas . I know it’d be nice to think rainbows and unicorns , but Alfie is from an era where they would’ve almost killed each other to win State Of Origin  . Firstly yes , he was caring for the player , but once he knew it was a mild concussion and the guy wasn’t gunna die you’d have to be pretty niave to rule out Langer looking at Cordner with one eye and looking at the whole in our defence with the other . Especially when they’re losing .

  • Cordner was filthy about coming off but that just showed how committed he was. He got his head in the wrong place and its pretty rare not to see someone come off with a HIA in those circumstances.

Personally I think Alf did us a massive favour. If Cordner gets back in that defensive line there's every chance they run at him and every chance he misses the tackle
  • Definitely player wellbeing. Cordner didn't know where he was or what day it was. If you watch the replay Cordner is knocked out and his arms go stiff. No chance he wasn't concussed.

  • All of the above. there's no doubt Boyd needed to come off, and NSW were probably better off with a fit player on the field, but you can imagine QLD would have wanted to see the back of him.

  • I’d say first and foremost that Alfie was thinking of the well being of Boyd Cordner.

  • 100% genuine. Good bloke Alfie.
  • Think he was just being a decent bloke, he seen Boyd got fucked up and attended to him. He definitely made sure to relay the point he was concussed, and you can debate the motives about that, but end of the day it was ethically the right call.

"Lussick first up contact is one of the worst in the NRL. Then he is always lying on the floor or letting a quick play the ball."

"But he is the one responsible for these type of efforts,  if they were a once or twice a season thing you could solely blame the players but they happen regularly every season,  this is on the coach."
